rossi 92 454

Post by oldebear1950 »

I got my new Rossi 454 rifle on Friday, and took it out to shoot today. Fired only 45 colt loads, both factory and my reloads, and both worked great.
Was firing to see how it worked, and will test for accuracy when I get the rear sight changed to a peep sight, and the pin from Stevesgunz to replace the safety.

.
Haven’t shot my 16” 454 enough, but it seems solid and held up to Buffalo Bore loads.

It really isn’t unpleasant to shoot either.

If your brass bulges the chamber must be oversize. My .45 Colt's don't do that. Neither do the .44's.

My 45 colts, both the factory and my reloads did not bulge.

I've had zero brass-bulge with the 454, although I've had a couple 45 Colt's and 44 Mag's over the years with very slight bulge. Chambers were probably slightly large, but I think somewhere I read that the rifle chambers tend to be on the upper-end of spec in many leverguns. Dunno if that's true though.

Don't own one but have read where many have had that issue with the new Rossi rifles. Was thinking about a .454 but was hesitant on that account. A local dealer had two when I was in there last week.

I have to be honest , but I have not had that problem. I fired so far to see how the 45 colts functioned and so far , no bulges, no hang ups, and I used both factory rounds and some of my reloads.
So far no problem. I wanted the 454 so I could possibly use both. But as I have two pistols that use 45 colt, will probably use that the most.
But being strong enough for 454, means I could use 45 colts for RUGERS and Thompson Contenders , no problem.
With that 20 inch barrel would be no problem.

I got mine about 15 years ago and it has a nice chamber -- no bulging even with full power 454 loads. I am no longer tough enough to shoot full-power loads, but the gun will certainly do it with no problem. I would have to seat bullets on the long side to use 45 Colt brass as mine is a bit picky about feeding.

Maybe Rossi has changed the chambers of their new 454 rifles, as mine fed and fired, both factory loads and my reloads, just fine. I put thru about 20 rounds of each, and they worked just fine. I was not checking for accuracy, just the functionality of using 45 colt rounds.
I had read of problems, and heard some were on Utube and stated they had problems. I do not know how old their rifles were , but some I saw on utube were 7 to 10 years old.

Interesting; mine both feed 45 Colt well, everything from LRN 'Cowboy' factory loads to hottish 45 Colt hand loads to 454 factory Buffalo Bore loads.

I think if I go out west my 16" 454 might be my 'NCW' (non-concealed weapon) in bear country. 375 Ruger for elk.

It sounds like a great gun to have, and a great 45 Super companion. :D

I have fired 360 gr loads at 1350 fps from my 45 Rossi, no bulge. I did have an older one that did bulge the brass with normal 45 Colt loads.

I had a conversation with Gary Reeder several years ago in which he stated he had never seen a Ruger revolver with oversized chambers. One of my oldest revolvers is a .45 Colt Blackhawk which even Ruger admitted had oversized chambers because they ended up replacing the cylinder.

I bought one of the Redding sizing dies with 2 carbide rings, one for the case body and one for the neck and it eliminated the unsightly bulge about 3/16" above the cartridge base that other sizing dies leave. I like it.

I am one of those folks. I bought a new Rossi in .357 that bulged cases pretty badly.... enough that I didn't feel comfortable in trying to squeeze them back down to "useable" again. I sent it back, and a few months later, got a warranty replacement (blued 20" instead of stainless 16" like I sent them) and it bulged the brass just about as bad. I sold it. I also have a blue 45 Colt, and it does bulge brass, but not as bad as the .357s did.
I had one in .44 mag that didn't bulge too terribly badly, either.

The Rossi's are very nice rifles, IMO.... my .45 Colt is more accurate than it should be, and they all fed just fine. If Rossi could just cut a consistently good chamber, I'd likely own quite a few of them, instead of only the one .45 Colt.

Like I said, I have two of the new ones. A 38/357 and the new 45 colt/454. I have put about 30 rounds thru both of them, no buldged cases, no scratched cases, no feeding problems, but will keep an eyefor any problems,
I will keep shooting them and see what happens.

I think when they are are referring to "bulged" cases, they mean, not the obvious feed-ramp bulge of self-loading pistols, but excessively expanded cases from an oversized chamber. You won't notice that until you go to resize the case. In years past, most of the .45 colt chambers and a good many .44 mag. were notoriously oversized leading to case splits and impending separations in as few as two reloads. Rossi buyers are still ranting on forums/boards that their .45 colt chambers are excessive but the reports are much fewer than a decade ago.

Yes it is , and I got one, and took it out and shot 45 colt loads, both factory and my reloads, and everything worked like it was supposed too. No scratched cases, no bulged cases, and was fun to shoot. To be honest will probably shoot more 45 colt loads than 454

I recall Paco's load data on gunblast had some heavy cast bullets running over 3000ftlbs, equating 444 marlin power.
Amazing from the small case.
