I bought and read this book about 4 decades ago, then picked it up and read it again today. A short and fascinating account of a fisherman and levergun hunter who eventually became the state game warden of New Mexico. Makes a feller want to go back in time.

First person adventure/history is about all I'll read. The experiences of others in a time long passed piques my interest. We mostly hear of their adventures, which are fascinating, but seldom hear of daily life. Finding a copy today may prove to be quite the undertaking.

"Eighty Years with Rod and Rifle" shouldn't be too hard to find. Another of his books, "When the Dogs Bark Treed" was available on Amazon yesterday. It's the author's account of the 100+ mountain lions he killed while a predator control officer. It should arrive soon.

Some one mentioned the failure of modern books to stimulate one's imagination. The reason is simple, modern writers just don't have the ability to paint a "word picture". Even musicians can't seem to do it today. Take a song like "Year of the Cat". Pay attention to the lyrics, or better yet find them on line and read them. Al Stewart paints a picture with words that allows the minds eye to watch the tale unfold.
