After over 20 years, finally finished!

Post by marlinman93 »

Got a nice surprise at our monthly OAC collector gun show this morning! Last month I gave the stocks from my very first Hepburn to my gunsmith friend so his checkerer could checker them. I built this rifle up from a project I bought from a friend over 20 years ago, but never got around to checkering the wood when I finished. Always put it off, until my gunsmith friend kept showing me checkering his friend did for guns he built!
The checkerer is a retired logger whose mid 80's and still doing great work. And at prices half of what professionals charge too! I'm really happy to finally get this very old project finally finished. This is a .45-70 and Dave Crossno carved my blanks for me, and I put 16 coats of Wipe On Poly on after fitting and finishing. Then hand rubbed the finish with rottenstone and buffed the stocks.

Nice hunk of lumber and rifle!
Kinda like my 375 H&H that I started in 1993, finished it during covid! Although it's not checkered, my eyes go cross-eyed about 3 minutes into trying to checker!

What a treasure, Vall! He did a wonderful job.

The late, great stockmaker, Dale Goens used to live a couple of miles from me. Beautiful stocks, lotsa money.

Thanks!
I liked the way it came out before, but always looked not quite finished. This finally put an exclamation point at the end of the build. This was the same gun before I gave him the stock set to work on:

Checkering, IMO, often hides the beauty of pretty wood. Not here though. Wow. Just wow. Gorgeous.
Kind regards,

There's enough open uncheckered wood to still let the beauty of the walnut show. I like that he did a slightly darker finish over the checkering as it enhances the checkering a bit, and makes it look like it's been there awhile.
