OT, post and beam

Some will enjoy this

This week we started a post and beam barn, 36 x 60'

It consists of 5 Bents at 12' centers. Posts are 8x8, 6x6, 4x7.

We were getting 2 bents set per day as well as all the tie beams.

This is a kit, the company's claim is if you have to cut parts something is wrong. And there is LOTS of stuff we are going to have to cut to spec! 2 calls into the company and they say we'll thats just what you have to do...

This is a first for me, the guys I work with have done a couple and never had to cut stuff ! Post covid workforce I guess...

Will, you are so blessed to be doing this kind of work. I think making/building things and healing human beings are the two greatest callings.

I'm right there with you on broken down, and beat up!
I've been driving 60 miles round trip each day to help my nephew wire his new home since October! It's been 13 yrs. since I retired and did any wiring, and all that running up and down ladders, pounding straps, and turning wrenches all day has me beat! I get home and grab the aspercreme to rub all my sore joints, then take some ibuprofen and crash in my recliner.
He's building a 5,000 sq. ft. home, and it seems like it's never going to end!

Yes sir- you forget how hard it is until you go back and do it again. Everyone thinks the trades aren't worth doing until they realize WE keep the heat on, toilets flushing, lights on and a roof over their heads.

Moving beams Monday morning I grabbed the end of an 8x8/12' and lifted to feel a slight pop in my shoulder! By quitting time my right are was pretty much useless!
I put the TENS unit on a couple trigger points and was back to ' normal ' ( well not completely) by morning. No not my rotator cuff!! Dunno what I pulled but it's on the mend.

It's a good building and should stand a long time. That kind of construction is great in a working shop. Easy built-ins. Easy insulation options.

These buildings are very time consuming, the siding is vertical so the 'girts' are all precut, color coded so ya just start installing along the plate and nail them in.
We have burned through 40 lbs of 12d's already!
The roof sheathing is all 1x6, thankfully we can use the nail guns on that! It's a 10 pitch, my worn out knees are not looking forward to that.
The angle braces are fastened with 40 penny ringshank nails and they SUCK to drive !!

I'm completely impressed, Will. I have used 1-inch bronze ringshank boat nails, but can scarcely imagine a 40-penny!

You're not kidding! Biggest reason I made the switch to the Dark Side/ or insurance world depending on your views. Too beat up for a lot of that stuff anymore.

Cool looking building. I've never built a new one, but have repaired a few that were 100 plus years old. One had oak pegs as fasteners for the outside corner posts. I still have one around here somewhere.

I worked construction when I first got out of the Navy and going to college. Built/remodeled 3 custom homes for the same contractor. Two included demo work while the 3rd was new from the ground up. Some site prep work, mostly framing, but some finish work... I found framing fit me, finish work, not so much. Learned a lot. Some of it useful! Love the look of pole barns and post & beam construction. Not terribly technical, but when done right, it makes the rest of the structure easy.

This company is out of Vermont I believe. They have a few mills they work with. It is all EWP - Eastern White Pine. The 6x6 posts were still on the stump and blowing in the wind a month ago... hope they don't twist too bad !

4x7 solid pine floor joists, 24" OC was today's goal. We got 55 of the 66 of them done. Finish those tomorrow and then start the roof framing.

Another hair raising day but the high stuff is done! 16' rafters every 2' for 60 feet. I feel like I was hit by a bus! Time for my weekly adjustment- go outside and listen you'll probably hear my spine cracking!

Love the shadow play in the rafters. Is that going to be a shed roof to the outer wall. Really nice looking, thanks.

After that crazy amount of rain sunday/Monday we got the gable walls framed in yesterday. This morning we put the shed roof rafters in and started the 1x6 roof sheathing. Run 4 courses of X length then 4 of another and so on. The labor that goes into one of these is crazy. We normally are a 3 man crew but we brought on 2 more guys just to make progress.

Well, umm, it's supposed to be that way Bill but things aren't what they used to be, we have had to cut a fair deal of this kit. From what I'm told you never had to cut anything in the past kit's my boss has done.
We realized a few parts were not shipped, the supplier will deliver after the 1st.

5 days of labor to sheath the roof! About 15,000 nails, about the same in staples.
Now on to siding, 1x8 and 1x10 shiplap pine.

Started siding yesterday, today we got the 2nd wall done. We are waiting for the painter to finish more siding so we can get the upper gables sided.

Well it's coming along, all the siding is up. Windows are installed and we have some of the doors made.
The past couple weeks were wet, snowy but the blue bird week this week has the roofer on site and the standing seam steel roofing is going on.

Yesterday we started the hay loft floor, it's 24x60 of 1x6 T&G pine and my crunchy knees aren't happy!

Oh? I thought it was a boat building building with a lofting floor above and the bracing points built into the structure below. A person could build fabulous boats in there, and have a fabrication and forge shop under the lean-to. Looks about perfect to me!

WOW, worked with Dad on a neighbor's when I was a kid in NE Ohio, we were only there for two days and it was more work than I cared for but they were friends. I learned a lot and after that when we needed a building Dad decided on Steel to keep the airplanes in to go with the three-story ARCH type we had.
Very impressive.

Took all day to assemble and hang this 9x9 sliding door. All t&g that was warped, cupped and it took 10' bar clamps to get it all together.

The loft floor was 104 board courses, 26-30 nails per board - minimum of 3640 nails. I drove at least half of those.

We have put close to 350 lbs of nails in this barn so far!

8d common hot dip galvanized in the floor, and siding( until we ran out and couldn't find anymore so we used 10s!)

I never got good enough to drive a 16d vinyl sinker in less than three strokes on a good day with my framing hammer -- and I always left mule tracks. A 40d hot-dipped ringshank has to be a workout!

I swing a 14oz titanium hammer. What it leaks I weight it makes up in speed, I can drive a nail easier than a 22oz steel hammer.
