Comparing Rossi 92 and 1886 locking lugs?

Post by Naphtali »

While Rossi 92 and 1886 lock work function identically, I anticipate 92's locking lugs' lengths are shorter because their cartridge lengths differ shorter. But what about thickness and width surfaces? Are 1886's lugs wider and thicker to accommodate their more powerful cartridges, or are 92's lugs identical except for being shorter?

Everything about the Winchester 1886 is larger than its baby brother the 1892. 1886 locking bars are longer, wider, and thicker. And profiles are different . 1886 also has a channel milled in its sides.

Yep, think of the 1892 as the scaled down little sister of the 1886, in every way. The '86 is pretty massive by comparison

Something else to consider is metallurgy. What needed to be for (argument sake ) say a half inch can now be 1/4" because we have developed better materials.

A lot of the earlier steels were not quite what can be made today. But back then almost every single piece was made from a forging which greatly added to the strength of each component where they may have lacked in metallurgy and heat treatment.
