Range Report: Taylor's Low Wall DST 22 with 10X Unertl Scope

Post by Old No7 »

Here's a range report on my Taylor's (Uberti) Low Wall with Double-set-triggers in 22 LR, setup with a mint 10X Unertl 1.25" Varmint Scope.

The scope has no marks on it and the lenses are bright and clear -- and thanks to the seller for spelling "Unertel" WRONG  when he listed it on GunBroker -- as nobody else saw it and the "buy it now" price was a couple $100 less than it really should have been.

The Low Wall did seem to have a burr in the action when I first got it; as the front trigger alone took over 12 pounds of pressure to drop the hammer. Not that I will use that trigger alone too much, but it has smoothed up some as it's been dry-fired and cycled with snap caps (plastic screw anchors or once-fired 22s). I'm pretty happy with the red-tinged finish of the stock and the case colors are OK for what they are (not "real" case-hardened, but done with a finishing process). Overall, it's a really nice replica of the Winchester 1885 single shot Low Wall rifle.

She shot OK the first couple of times out, but I wanted to try some better ammo and I also needed to shim the rear mount up. Today, she shot really well with Wolf Match Target ammo. See the bench setup and a 50-yard target below, shot after taping up other holes from sighting in with other ammo. This was the best group of the day, and she'll repeat this -- IF I do my part and hold her well. "Not too tight, not too loose" just how the lady likes it.

It's official -- she's a keeper!

When I saw the picture I went straight to their site. I can't tell you how happy my wife is that they don't make it in Hornet.

Nice looking rifle Darryl I've always admired that type of action though I have never owned one, the color of the wood is also to my liking

Very nice! Some of the Wolf ammunition is surprisingly accurate.

Have fun!

Really nice setup and good shooting!
Have you ever separated your LR ammo into batches by weight? I have some Aquila Gold Rifle Match that seems to benefit from that.
Kind regards,
Tycer

That's a really handsome combo you are running there. It would certainly be "right up to the wire" against my CZ 457 Varmint.
I haven't seen Wolf Match Target on a shelf for quite some time.

Wow! That’s really impressive!

Someone had an original Winchester at the CSA in Arkansas this year and it was a really sweet shooting gun.

I haven't tried that, but once when we had a 22 LR Match at 100 and 200 yards * I did separate them by rim thickness. That was a chore -- never to be repeated!

* That took a lot of elevation on the scope -- more than I had actually -- I had to mount an "aiming bullseye" 12 inches above the "real" bull to aim at (at 200)

Good report .I m currently trying to decide to which to buy either a Taylors/Uberti low wall 22lr or a Miroku Winchester 1885 22 rimfire low wall.It s a hard decision to make as both are good rifles
