Win. M70 Sniper rifle WW2?

Post by 1894cfan »

Was just watching Forgotten Weapons O3A-4 video and got to thinking. I've got a Winchester M70 that was made in May of 1941 that has a cutout for a 5rd stripper that was chambered in 30 Gov't '06. Was this rifle ever used as a sniper rifle during WW2? Anybody have any other history of the Win M70 use in WW2? TIA
Tell you what, as long as we're discussing the 30'06, what powder load was used in the Garand rifle, and was that load ever used in sniper rifles?

Thanks for that, Bruce. The M70 that I have from my Grandfather had the steel butt plate replaced with a rubber recoil pad and Lyman 57W receiver sight. Heck, he even removed the sling swivels for woods use since he was living in Dunsmuir California at the time.

It's been drilled at the forward receiver and left side rear for scope mount and receiver sight which it has.
Grandfather never got around to getting the scope mount for it and I haven't been able to track one down! :(

Six, I've got that powder, how much do I use for 150gr bullet Garand load. Got several hundred Rem Corloks or whatever they're called. A friend has an M1 Garand, I can share ammo with him.

I used to use 4895 by the 8lb keg……can’t remember the load but with a 150 grain bullet I would use 2 grains less than full load out of the Lyman manual…..works well in the Garand, Smith Carona 03A3, and the mighty BAR….

Six, I've got Sierra, Hornady and Speer manuals. Anything close to what you suggest with IMR4895 in those manuals? TIA

1894 Fan,
I left out one non-pertinent item…..some years back I switched from IMR to Hodgdons powder……it meters better. Velocities and pressures are the same as I chrono everything when testing and never could tell the difference. I use H4895 in the 06, .308, and the .223…..THOUSANDS of rounds I’ve shot out of various semi autos….

This should tell. 😇———006

YES! So your 48gr load would be safe in an M1 Garand?
Was just looking at the Hodgdon powder site and took a look at the Win 748 loading, 48gr with a Vel. of 2,810fps and a pressure of 46,000CUP which ought to be about what your 48gr of IMR4895 was. Would you use that load of 748 in a Garand? Just picked up an 8lb container of the stuff.

That the load I use out of my National Match Garand, the BAR and the 03A3 but usually with cheaper bullets than the Nosler….

Sorry, I know little about 748. I can load about everything with 4895, bullseye, Unique and 5744…….but I probably have 100 or more pounds of powder from all kinds of makers….

150 gr fmj and 47.0 gr. of IMR4895 is what I have shot in my Garand forever. Duplicates surplus ammo velocity in my tests.
