Gunny what do you use for getting them used to gunfire? I used a .22 flobert revolver then a .410 all quite away from their sensitive ears. One black Lab I hunted with never flinched at gun fire and got very excited at hearing my keys in the gun safe...

It all starts in the whelping box John. Once their ears begin to work noise is a part of the daily routine. TV on, radio, intentional loud noise, clapping, dropping things etc. Ill then start with an air rifle then subsonic 22s then real gun shots from a distance. Even use some firecrackers at distance.

With Parker she showed to be reactive to all kinds of noise. When it came time to introduce her to shooting I kept her away and when the first shot went off she literally dragged me over to the noise and sat down. She still reacts to some noises but not like she did!
A dog I have years ago would sneak forward when I would shoot, one day I was testing 338 win mag loads and she crept up until she was sitting under the muzzle. She got muzzle blast big time- she never crept up again !

Used to have a terrier mix which was mostly Border Terrier. She would chase arrows. I would get out the target, get my distance, and draw the bow, and she would be right by my feet. As soon as I released the arrow, she took off chasing it. No, she never caught one or got injured, BUT she never would quit chasing. She loved it. Dogs all have their own personalities. My two terriers who have Irish Terrier in the mix are scared to death of thunder and fireworks.

My JRT chased arrows too. He was hard on cedar shafts!!!

Been talking with some folks, they want a yellow boy. They came to the house this morning, mom,dad, son & daughter. After introductions the girl asked if she could hold a puppy. I said yes, which one. I WANT THAT ONE- the little black pup!

So we talked and they held all the pups, now the girl wants the little yellow girl- kids!!
The big discussion was how do we puppy proof? Umm, put everything up !

Teething is sure to see a lot of damage to everything. I had to unplug every electric cord and put them up. An Irish terrier chewed through a 4 gauge set of jumper cables, all the way through, and left them in about 6 pieces. She loves wires.

My JRT chewed wires too! Must be in the terrorist DNA. I wired up a 9 volt battery and left the cord dangling, he stopped chewing cords!

The yellow pup tats feeding in the middle I've started calling Moose. He is big, in fact he is 16 oz bigger than the smallest pup. Gonna be a big dog when he is done growing!

Gunny, has Miss Parker shown any signs yet of "mommy fatigue"? It usually comes to this at some point where mom simply has to get a break -- and the weaning is not far behind.

Yes Bill she has been spending more time away. She appears to be producing a little less milk but 2 weeks is too early to start weaning. So I'm keeping her food intake high.

Had a club board meeting last night through zoom and Sage made her online debut, even hamming it up for the camera with a great big yawn!

I don't think so, just how I snapped the pic as she turned when I called her name. However a couple more weeks when those needles are at their sharpest she will be doing her best to get away!

I was going to remove their dew's but since they were born over Memorial Day weekend and every vet I tried to contact was closed and a maximum of 3 days for removal it just didn't work out. They can still be removed but now it's a surgical procedure. Personally I don't care if my dogs have them or not. I've never had them removed from my pups in the past and they haven't been an issue.

Last weekend a couple came from 2 hours away to see the puppies. They kind of picked a pup. They just left after spending about an hour holding, cuddling, playing with, getting tinkled on by all the pups. And they took an informal vote, mom-dad & son want the same pup from last week. The daughter wants the little girl ,Pinky( pink collar ) or the black pup.
I told them to discuss it and discuss it again then let me know. They were first to contact me about the puppies so they have first dibs.
Another person wants to come tomorrow as it's a ' holiday ' umm not for us working people ! I'm getting a bad vibe as they were supposed to be here last weekend but didn't show...

Normal morning of cleaning the box, pups up and around and I put them back in the box with a kiss goodbye and go to work.
About 10 I get a call , I can hear a puppy in the background screaming! Leave the jobsite and rush home. Called the vet enroute to alert them. Jump out of the truck at the house and rush in the house... it's quiet... Pinky is up walking around... what the... I picked her up, got kisses, no signs of injuries. Hmm, will she eat? Yup. Vet calls back , doc is in surgery can you stay by the phone until he finishes. So I explained that she was up ,active, ate. I guess she had to pass wind !!

So this afternoon I took them out so I could clean the box, boy they tinkle a lot !!
When I was through I got on the floor with a few toys, squeaky toy, racquet ball, another ball with bb's in it. Sage didn't like the squeaky toy- she growled at me then barked ! 2 of the boys started to play with the noisy ball. They are starting to show some personality!

Let the weaning begin!
Parker is not making as much milk as the puppies would like so all this week I've been offering a very thin gruel. They have been kind of avoiding it but they are now lapping it up with enthusiasm. Won't be long now and they will be slipping around in the dish covering themselves in gruel !

The black pup is a regular comedian- he has such a personality, always jumping, stalking the others.

Puppies are a great way to find out if a human is worth knowing. Depending on how a human treats the puppies, you can find out a lot. Puppies are mischevious and full of life.

It's a brand new day for a puppy !
I just took them out in a wide new world!
When I had Parkers litter, not Parkers litter I made up some chutes with 2x4 and wire fence. Couple screws and I can easily put up or take down.
So they got to go out on the deck today.
Only the black pup took the ramp down to the lawn. He is very bold !

Make sure they see people when possible. 2 of my dogs got stopped from being well socialized by Covid. They are still vot very social.

Yes that is very important and yes my pups are handled daily by me and I invite people to visit as much as possible.
They had a very busy day yesterday, friends stopped by as did my sister and niece. I do my best to introduce puppies to sights, sounds, smells and people.
Sounds the past couple days- lots of thunderstorms and not a single scared puppy !

Smart thinking Gunny,

I started with my pups, first outside with a pop gun. Then move into another room in the house after awhile. Eventually popping right next to them. Later in life people were amazed just how excited they would get when they saw a rifle or hand gun in my hands. They knew we were in for a good day outside.

Yes, any and all sounds go a long way for puppies.
Imagine coming into the world and the only sense you have is a sense of smell. Then at 6 months old ( extrapolated per human vs canine) you can begin to see! Then a couple months later you can hear- my word talk about sensory overload!
Just close your eyes and listen sometime. Humans miss A LOT of what's happening around themselves.
I normally start with an air pistol, then CBs then go up from there. Of course there is fire crackers at distance, popping balloons- whatever else makes noise.
With balloons I let the puppies play with them but im very careful about the shreds of latex don't get ingested. Any loud noises that a puppy can shrug off is good reinforcement for a successful future in the field.

The weather cleared a bit so I decided I'd get them out for a bit.

I've got plastic lattice, wire fencing, fence panels and a piece of hog panel to keep them corralled. Wouldn't ya know it one boy figured out he could slip through the hog panel!? I had to put a piece of wire fence on that. They can really test your best laid plans !
