Had a scare yesterday

Post by GunnyMack »

As some may know, I'm a carpenter by trade, I work with 2 other guys. We hunt & fish together too.
Yesterday D wasn't feeling good. Fortunately we had a short day but by 2 pm D was having left arm pain and went to the ER. by 5 he had a stent put into an artery at his heart!
He is lucky to say the least. He is only 46

A few weeks ago a friend was throwing up, excruciating headache for a few days and fortunately his wife noticed he was slurring words and to the ER, he wound up taking a medivac flight to another hospital for emergency brain surgery to fix an aneurysm.

Don't ignore you body's warning signs!!

Lost my favorite uncle decades ago to an aneurism when he came back from a senior junket to Las Vegas. He was riding home with a lady friend and said he didn't feel well, and had a headache. She took him to her home and let him go lay down in a spare bedroom. When she came to check on him a couple hours later he was gone. Had she taken him to the hospital he might have been helped in time. We didn't blame her, as it's possible he wanted to just lie down and let it pass.

Glad Your Friend is on the mend ! In 2009 My Mom passed from old/age & surgery on a Friday. The next morning I got a phone call early in the morning. my Coworker and Friend Cal died on the way to work, dropping His motorcycle in a rural front yard. He was 61 and in excellent health. ended up He had a blockage in His neck. I am still haunted by His loss . He was in a class all His own, and the Finest Man I ever worked with.

Had my first scare when I was 17... one of my best friends invited me on a ski trip, I couldn't get off work... 5 of them died in the fire at the cabin. At 36 one of my hunting partner's collapsed in his closet, getting dressed for work... he was 34... (he missing hunting the year before as he said no male in his families history had lived past 32 and he wasn't chancing be away from medical care if needed). 2 years ago I went to my Navy unit's reunion in Atlantic city... the closest restaurant that served breakfast was the equivalent of 2-½ blocks away, on the way back thru the casino I felt chest pains and short of breath. I sat down and rested. After about 10 minutes I felt better and finished the walk back to my room. Several months later I was talking to another of our former hunting foursome and he told me he'd had a heartattack and had a stent put in. At my nest physical I mentioned my episode to my Doctor... she put me in for tests... now 2 stents later, I'm much better able to carry on. I'm still not even feelin' 60 again, but I'm much closer to my actual age than feeling 90! I'm lucky... and you're right... do NOT ignore those warning signs!

Jeez, I'm 45. Stories like this kinda give me the willies along with the fact that my dad who did not smoke or drink nor was he overweight had to have a double bypass when he was only 52.

Glad your pal is on the mend 👍🏻

.
"..if it ain't broke, don't fix it..." Leads to more men dying than any cause I can think of. That, plus even if they go to a doctor, they settle for bare-minimum care just enough to tell their wife "yeah, I got a check-up" and get her to quit nagging him.

If you want to minimize surprises, take your wife in WITH you, clipboard-in-hand, and get good thorough care.

Also don't assume your health insurance will cover what you need; their goal is to apply band-aids until you are old enough to hand off as an impending train-wreck to Medicare. Saves money versus proper care. Medicare then takes over, and payouts exceed premiums each year, so no way they want to keep you around long.

NONE of that will change until Medicare is eliminated, and regular insurance has to keep responsibility for the whole duration.

I used to be tough, but I got over it.
The years between 45 and 55 are very dangerous for guys because they still feel tough and vigorous. They believe that they can just push through anything. They don't realize how the rush and stress of life has worn on them for the last 25 or 30 years. That time has gone by more quickly than they ever imagined that it could.
That's exactly how I was able to earn my stent at 48 and my triple bypass at 50. Sometimes its better not to be so "tough".

Wow Gunny. Be careful down there buddy.

It's like Doc says, though. And I'm as guilty as anyone of it.
Our middle sons in-laws had their 34yo daughter drop dead a couple weeks ago. Said she didn't feel well, had a seizure, and was dead 10 minutes later.

a preacher could mine this topic! i was born in '45, [not THAT 45], recently had an EKG and blood work. my organs are OK and my heart is healthy. but this is no guaranty of anything. i am ready to drop dead every day, because that means i'll be WITH Jesus WHERE He is. which is WAY BETTER than being here.

i ask Jesus to make me useful if it's not today, and make it QUICK if it is.... :)

methinks it's good to keep short accounts and forgive everyone of everything and let our creator be the judge of everyone.

I'm 68, no wife, no kids, no family I care about! When it's my time I'm NOT gonna go kicking and screaming, especially the way things are in the world at this time! Besides, why give the vultures in the medical profession any more than I HAVE to. BYE

I'm at the very begining of the age groups you mention. I can feel a difference in myself that wasn't there in my 30s.

I go in one month from now to have the vein in my left leg fixed. It lets some blood go back the wrong direction and causes swelling. There are a couple of areas of skin on my foot that are dark, thickened, and scaly from improper blood flow. Oh, I also have gall stones that are not bothering me. At my next appointment with my PCP, we are going to discuss options for that. I also am going to get a Colonoscopy scheduled. I don't want one, but cancer is worse than a day of starvation and sitting on the toilet before getting a camera shoved up inside of you. 7 or 8 CT scans in the last 13 months (strokes caused by Covid Vaccine) and a couple of Pompous A^^****s trying to tell me it was from undiagnosed and unfindable A-Fib before a Professor of Cardiology at U.T. Southwestern stepped in and proved there was no A-Fib by implanting a moniter for 3 months and then removing it. Funny, but my Aorta and Pulmonary artery are clean. No plaques at all. Not sure why or how.
