Remember when hunting was a solitary affair? Just you and your thoughts. You could solve all of the worlds problems. Maybe one of the reasons we have so many problems these days is that the great problem solvers now take cell phones/tablets and all other manner of distractions along. I also wonder how many missed opportunities are caused by these distractions.

I don't take any of that stuff.
I grew up in the era of map reading and using a compass.
Our first trip into Mexico, I showed my Dad a map of Baja Norte and said, "See this village? If we aren't back in a month start searching there!"
We traveled around the world with no gps .. no cell phones .. no computers ..
In 1966 when I decided to make a phone call home at Christmas time I called up the MARS station from the Company Office and they patched me through to Barry Goldwater's HAM station who called my folks and we talked for about 10 minutes. THAT was high tech!

It's funny, years ago in the pre-cell phone world we thought nothing of going way out in the boonies in some breakdown prone rolling wreck and now no one can do anything without their phone.

The young cashier at Cal Ranch yesterday couldn't complete my checkout without texting during the process...

Army taught me to read a map and use a compass. Probably a useful skill at any time.

At our hunt club it's kind of an unwritten rule to take your phone, about 10 years back one of our members fell and broke his leg. He spent the night cold,wet and in pain. It was late afternoon before he was found and rescued. Fortunately he had his 2 English setters that kept him from hypothermia. If he had his phone he would have received help within minutes instead of hours.
Sure we can read maps, use a compass and can survive but we aren't getting younger, having that tie to others is good.

i fished in blind fog, can't see one end of the boat from the other. had a part-time fatho-meter and a Loran-A oscilloscope. i would troll for two or three days and then turn toward the shore line and listen for the surf as i closed in. i would look for someone running in with radar and follow along. my average error was ten miles.

now the average error is 10 feet. i've used the gps in a phone with noaa navigation charts to split the difference between rock piles that i can't see. this will work until the gps wars begin . . .

I sometimes joke that I've never been lost, but haven't known how to get home a few times! Then I moved to Dallas during about what seemed like a month long rainstorm. Lived & worked downtown. Went to work in the dark, came home to temp quarters in the dark. Never realized that downtown streets don't run in cardinal directions... they're all pretty much NE to SW and NW to SE. Kind of humbling. Once I got a day off when the sun was out, all was revealed!

Both my daughter and I get disoriented in Texas because the grid seems to be set to magnetic north rather than true north, and we both use the true north grid. Houses and streets where we live are generally aligned with Polaris. So when we're driving around Leander and Cedar park and Marble Falls, etc. we can get turned around. ALSO, the GPS directions have been monkeyed with to exacerbate the problem, it seems!
