Price Check: Winchester 70 pre-64 243 Win.

Post by Mainehunter »

Checking on some thoughts and pricing comparisons. Standard model, SN# is putting it around 1961. I would rate it overall very good to excellent. Does have a cheesy looking Bushnell scope mounted. Shop is asking for $1350. Thanks!

Very good to excellent can cover a pretty big range of condition. Sounds like a good price for true "excellent", but too high for true "very good". I'd look at the closed auctions and compare condition to what you're looking at.

Not sure but a brand new FN made Featherweight goes for about $1100. Depends on how bad you want it. I would not consider the scope in the valuation. Maybe talk him down. Let them keep the scope if you need to. I might keep the mounts though if there are decent. Not my cartridge but I'd be inclined to go somewhere from $1000-1200. I wouldn't go anywhere close to that on a push feed. Maybe on a new classic as I've found them to be excellent rifles.

Wow. I just got done studying this matter on Guns Int. I had lost track of the market of model 70,s since I got the lever bug. Seems like yours is right in line with the going asking prices. '06's and 270's with cut stocks and pads are being listed around 1200$. Saw a 1990 ish Classic in 300 Win listed for $1500!. Cabelas of course.

I had a circa 1960 FWT 243 I bought at auction about 16 years ago in 95% condition for $425 and sold about five years ago for $1200 on GB . I also had a circa 1956 Varmint 243 I picked up in 1987 or so for $600 and sold it about 2001 for over $1500 . Prices on these things come and go .

Thanks for all of the replies, gentleman! :D Poked around the web and what they are asking for is about the same. After some back and forth bickering between the shop owner and myself who I've known for years, we settled on $1200 and he's keeping the hideous scope. Hopefully, I'll pick it up in the next week or two. I do like the chambering plus I was supposed to have gotten my dad's 1937 M70 in 9x57. but my brother refuses to give it up so maybe I can tempt him on a trade. We shall see!

A 9×57? I wouldn't part with it either. Congrats on the new .243.

I had a circa 1938 standard weight in 22 Hornet for awhile . It was without a doubt the best shooting Hornet I’ve ever owned . Only downfall , before I got it the entire gun had been restored/refinished , granted it probably was better in the long run I just never cared for redone .
