If you have or love dogs ...
Veterinary scientists have isolated the compound in grapes and raisins that can cause severe gastritis and even kidney failure in dogs that have eaten them. It's tartaric acid.

He is a slow reader . . .Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 7:09 am Veterinary scientists have isolated the compound in grapes and raisins that can cause severe gastritis and even kidney failure in dogs that have eaten them. Here are more important reads for dog lovers -- not just the article on macadamia nuts but the other articles, too, on chocolate, xylitol (deadly!) and other foods.

You're spot on there, Bill! Xylitol will kill a dog in a horribly, panful way. It's also listed as "Birch Sugar" on some packaging. Sugar free gum is often found with this stuff in it.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Wed Oct 05, 2022 1:04 pm Here are more important reads for dog lovers -- not just the article on macadamia nuts but the other articles, too, on chocolate, xylitol (deadly!) and other foods.

Another one that's slipped under the radar is Gorilla Glue. Dogs like the taste and after they swallow enough of it, it begins to harden in their stomachs. They end up needing emergency surgery and if it's goes too long, it's fatal.
There's a whole list of houseplants out there too. Some may only make them sick for a few hours or days, but others can be worse. Our Great Dane kept getting into our hibiscus. It would make her really sick for a couple of days. Kept moving it around the house to keep her out of it, but no luck. Finally got rid of the plant. It was huge and I was tired of moving it anyway.

Re: If you have or love dogs ...
Funny thing is a dog i had in the past had a thyroid issue and the pills went into a grape and toss to the dog, she never had any side effects from it. Now large amount is a different thing. Ive lernt since then and don't give my dogs anything that could cause issues.
Now my oldest, Winnie has become a diabetic, she has aged faster than you could imagine. Insulin 2x day for a dog that doesn't like needles!
Another big thing to watch for is stagnant water, different algae can indeed kill a dog if ingested.
Garlic is bad too.
Oh and apparently dogs love ear wax so watch out for hearing aids! (Don't ask me how I know but home owners insurance covered the cost)

Yeah, a little bit of the wrong food is usually harmless. Even too much ham can cause kidney issues. Every dog is different though, I had a Boxer/ Dane mix that ate a whole tin full chocolate cookies and drank half a bottle of Jack Daniels and lived to be just short of sixteen years old! She was one sick puppy for a couple of weeks though. It was a good thing the floors weren't finished yet!
That dog got into everything, how she didn't do herself in is still a mystery to me!
She was the toughest, bravest dog I've ever had.

Re: If you have or love dogs ...
We are very careful in what we allow the weiner dogs to eat. What amazes me is that my FIL, essentially a farmer, would always feed the dogs leftovers from the table. Any leftovers. They never seemed to get phased by them. I know there had to be things in there that they shouldn't eat, but as he would say, "they're farm dogs; they can eat anything".

Had an Irish Terrier who would steal whiskey from you. She jumped up and stole a rum cake once. I bake it with Stroh 160 proof rum. She got drunk off of the cake. She chewed the cap off of a bottle of Tullamore Dew and got so drunk that I thought she was going to die. She finally did pass away at around 8 years old. She was an escape artist.
