It has begun!

Post by Drawdown »

I was under the hickories at day light, opening morning for squirrels. But finding this shed is what's got me excited! I'm sure it's same 10pt I got pics of every day last Nov14-20th. Found this shed about 20 yds from where I'd made a mock scrape, put a camera on it 1st Nov. It's not my primary spot, I didn't even hunt it last fall. Checked the camera late Nov, he'd burned this spot up!

Only reason I found the shed, I shot a squirrel off side this tree, see where the buckshot hit just above the barrel. Shed laying right there!

Found the shed right at the back end of this dead fall. This dead fall is what I'd planned to sit in and bowhunt last fall. Perfect groundblind for an old logging road he traveled, rub & scraped on. I found sign he's been bedding in it often looks like.

This spot is a little one, actually in city limits of a nearby town. Maybe I better spend some time there this fall!

If he's been around that long I'd bet he's learned a thing or two. Likely he won't use that same bed once it gets close to hunting season. The survivors don't tend to be predictable.

Thanks everyone, I'm gonna put some effort into him. It's not my primary spot, it's actually within the neighboring towns city limits. There's a big spur that runs out right there, which that ridge runs up to the highest point in KY not far away. The spot is a couple little finger points that run out right into the town. I got pics of him last Nov right at peak of rut, because there's always a group of does there. But it shocked me to find his shed there, I figured him a high mountain buck, like 95% of the rest the good bucks around here when they mature. These big old veterans go high, stay high, next to impossible to pattern for hunting!
But his shed being there, no doubt dropped I'd say late March, so if he's down in there then, maybe he's in these low woods a lot more than normal?
But I'll give it some time, put a camera on it soon, have some fun!
It'll be worth it to me, if I do get pics, know I'm hunting him for real! I've got a really nice 8pt even closer to home, that I'm gonna concentrate on, he's not to hard to get too also!

Nice sheds, nice squirrels and a nice old 16-gauge single shot. I still have Dad's much-used Winchester Model 37 in 16. 8)

I hunted with a Mod 37 in 12ga late 70's- mid 80's. I wish I had it back, and sure wish I had one in 16ga. I found this Mod 370 about 10 years ago, bought it on spot. Sure glad I did, what it lacks in prestige, it mote than makes up for it in killing. I believe I've done better with it than any 12ga I ever had!
