No plastic in my desks. I suppose that would make all the difference

I remember nuclear bomb shelters on display (for sale) back in 1962 during and after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
One of the neighbors actually bought one and had it installed by an earthmoving contractor.
My farm is about 1 1/2 hours east of the Twin Cities, also down wind of the prevailing wind direction, so any nuclear activity that direction would certainly blow my way.

There was a lot of interest in such shelters back in the day. Most of my people were poor and we were simply hosed living a half hour west of San Antonio and the military installations there.

Then base realignment happened and we are not so close to anything. I personally do not think I would be happy cooped up in an underground concrete bomb shelter.

.
Post 9/11/01 a friend did a whopping business installing generators, and some of the wealthy elite had huge (many-thousand-gallon) underground tanks for diesel fuel to power their whole-house systems. Some had built essentially-complete houses underground adjacent or connected to their primary homes.

I'd settle for a tornado-proof basement, personally... :| ...just some place I could relax and sleep when there's bad thunderstorms and tornados a couple hours away.

Looks like it would make a rather decent shooting bench. Yea, I remember sitting in them in school WAY back in the early '60s.
