Inflation and guns
I was shopping for a new pickup this weekend and I got some serious sticker shock! I don't see myself spending $73,000 plus on a pickup any time soon.
I was talking this over with my shooting buddies, one of who just bought a Ford F250 for just under $100,000, but he bitches that pistols cost so much. I think if you compare prices on pistols with new vehicles, pistols have not gone up nearly as much!

Re: Inflation and guns
Really a bad time currently to consider buying a vehicle; new or used! All seem to be increasingly overpriced, and only lack of sales will force manufacturers to drop those crazy prices.

I've been in the market for a old pickup or suv for a year now!
Nothing out there within a decent price!
Living in costal Maine makes all the vehicles rot out in 10 years!
They want 5 grand for a 17 year old rust bucket that would never pass inspection!
Crazy times here in America

Re: Inflation and guns
A good friend of mine is a finance manager at one of the larger Chevy dealerships in the area. They can't get new vehicles, their lot usually has a couple hundred new vehicles in stock and four more stores in the group to choose from. They may have 20 new cars and trucks right now. Just about everything that gets delivered is already sold. People are paying sticker price +$ to get what they want.
the issue goes all the way back to the lockdowns, at least a large part of it. The manufactures can't get the parts they need, especially computer chips for GM, and it's holding up production.
Much like new construction prices. Contractors can't get materials and what they can get is being inflated to ridiculous prices yet the demand is still there so they will pay $60 a sheet for OSB because someone out there will buy the house for $20k more than it would have cost a year ago.
It seems that the demand for firearms is tapering off a bit. I've been seen guns for sale, at least online that are more in line with what they have been in the past. I've been watching the Benelli M4s through this whole thing. They were up to $3k or more for a basic gun and when I looked the other day I found several back down to pre-plague prices.
Supply and demand. Throw in some inflation here and there and there you have it.
We're putting one of our rental properties up for sale in a couple more weeks. It's never been worth this much and I'm really tired of taking care of that one. It was poorly built in the '70s and I've spent that last 15 years correcting what I can, but it's time to be someone else's property.

Re: Inflation and guns
I agree that the availability of new vehicles are being affected by the chip shortage. All of the lots seem to be empty. But people in the San Antonio area are buying new pickups for $10k over MSRP. Used vehicles are bringing a premium as well.
People are buying new homes for $70,000 over asking price. (I'm still not sure how that works.)

There are a Whole Lot of people leaving those "Blue States". I sure hope they leave their craziness behind!
My dad has a neighbor in FL that just sold his place for three times what he paid for it just a few years ago. The old man has had his even longer. He's a happy camper.
Crazy times.

I was helping my mother shop for an SUV today and darn near fainted at the prices. The sales lady said that used vehicles are nearly 45% higher than they were 3 years ago and close to 30% for new.

Re: Inflation and guns
My cousin sold a Chevy 3/4 ton (could have a been a 1-ton, but not a duel wheel) diesel this last week for $65,000 to a dealer, no trade, just sold it outright. It was two years old, and had twenty something thousand miles on it. He bought it brand new for $58,000 before sales tax, two years ago.
Around here, there are a lot of used half tons at dealers for sale, but the diesels are hard to find. People are crazy, and fighting for these used late model diesels. As a matter of fact, I know of a situation where two different salesmen called prospective customers in when they got a particular diesel used in and two of the customers actually got in a fight over it.
I understand the shortage, and the reason's why, but I don't understand why some people are stupid enough to pay crazy stupid high prices for a used truck, right now. I guess there is nothing like not being able to get something, right now, I guess.

Re: Inflation and guns
It's the paper money and crazy times. Values of cars and guns generally stay the same but todays paper money de-values.
Back in the late 1800's it was said a cowboy could by a new Colt SAA for a $20 gold piece.
Pretty much the same today. For a $20 gold piece you can still buy a new Colt SAA

Re: Inflation and guns
I bought a new GMC 4x4 just before the cold snap. It has 13 thousand on it now. 6.2L motor with 10 speed trans, it's the AT4 model with factory 2" lift. I had forgot the sticker shock after 2 days, this was money well spent, and truck will be paid off in 2 months. The big 420 horse engine and trans are the best part , a hoot to drive, went to the ranch and drove 1 mile 4x4 through a fresh plowed field and never spun a tire. A truck that rides like a Cadillac and moves out like a muscle car. I'd buy another in a darn minute!
You cant spend too much $ on trucks, motorcycles, and good bourbon
