Unloaded my muzzle loader
Unloaded my 50 cal. muzzle loader today. Rested on the hood of my crane truck at about 60 yards. Dead on. As it has been every time I've shot it for the last 20 years. 90 grains of ffg Goex, 200 grain XTP in a sabot. Kills deer graveyard dead every time. I traded for this Thompson kit gun that someone built with all iron (steel) furniture except for the brass patch box. The barrel from Thompson being 1:48 twist wouldn't stabilize either bullets or balls so I spent the bucks and bought a Green Mountain barrel. Without any reservation I endorse Green Mountain barrels as being as good as anything out there. I shot it with a receiver sight for 10 years of so and changed to the ancient Weaver after that. The load only drops about 4 inches at 200 yards so I'm giving up nothing when hunting with this rifle.

Nice shot!
I use 90gr. of blackhorn behind a 300gr .452 XTP mag in a black harvester crush rib sabot, and is super accurate and lays some serious smack down on deer. I agree, the only thing you give up is a quick second shot, but if you do your part you will never need it.

Your on the money there MM......My Thompson 54 cal shoots rd balls with pillow ticking patches good enough for me to tie for second in a silhouette match earlier in the year.
That's the same load I use ..90 of Goex FF-----6

If you put the crosshairs on the right spot, that should make a deer a pile of venison quite well.

There’s something to be said for the basics:
> precision rifled metal tube
> bullet
> gun powder
> spark
> metal sights
> precision rifled metal tube
> bullet
> gun powder
> spark
> metal sights

Re: Unloaded my muzzle loader
You are a lucky guy. You get to use scopes and sabots, which are a no-no here (as well as powder pellets).
My T/C Hawken kit gun shoots well with ball and boolits. I retired it and went with a 700ML.

It could have been. Twice I set my trigger and squeezed off the shot while the cross hairs were on a doe with twin fawns. They were pretty small so I figured they needed their Maw.
