Somewhat quieter.......

#1 Post by Ray » Wed Mar 25, 2020 6:13 pm

7.62x39mm and .223/5.56 nato loads......

Recently I tried some subsonic 7.62x39mm factory loads in a 9" barreled AK pistol and it is much easier on the ears than standard loads.

The downside is .40 s & w level ballistics and won't self-cycle but a compact, easy to point/maneuver 30 shot "bolt action" is still a viable homestead defense tool......

I am trying to load my own along this line with trailboss, red dot, and 2400.....subsonic speed is not absolute necessary just quiter/milder for shorter barrel length use.

As for .223, I am going to try some faster burning powder rate .221 fireball loads.....needless to say, a 8" barreled ar-15 with normal pressure loads is not only egregiously loud but has a disorienting cuncussionous blast when fired indoors even with adequate hearing protection.

Your thoughts and or advice ?

For .223/5.56mm try 4gr Trail Boss with a 55gr FMJ. Got that load from the Hodgdon web site. Try looking there for subsonic 7.62x39 loads. HTH

I take that back about the 7.62x39 subsonic loads, looks like they don't have anything like that. Try playing around with Trail Boss, I wouldn't go higher than the shoulder with the TB powder. Good luck.

I haven't made any for an AR, but I did make some for my Mini 30. A little Unique and a .32 DEWC shoots great, but the same thing. Straight pull bolt gun, but very quiet. Even more quiet in a 7.62x54 Mosin. :D

I don't have those problems with my stop-assault rifle.
