This was my late Mom's favorite carol, and the older I have gotten, the more I have come to appreciate the grace and peace that is in it.
The lyric was a poem written by Episcopal clergyman Phillips Brooks after a pilgrimage in 1865 to Bethlehem. His church organist, Lewis Rednick, added the melody.
These precious words are well worth contemplating -- in any season.
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

The old ones are best. Simple four part harmony.
We have a 24/7 Christmas Carol FM station and fully half or more are not even recognizable as Christmas songs...

My musical talent goes no further than turning a radio on and finding the station. HOWEVER, I know what I like to hear. That is still a beautiful song.

One of my favorites....
Crosby/Bowie Peace on Earth - Drummer Boy
Two different generations, and two different genres of music, harmonizing....it captures the spirit of unity and peace and 'brotherly love' really well.

A "Christmas Carol", by Charles Dickens, is certainly worth reading.
