A buddy of mine was moving to Colorado, as he was cleaning out his family's farm house he found a box of parts including a stock & the rest of a 340. He said here take this and see if its complete. Yup everything was in the box. I called him and asked if he wanted it back, naw keep it! Mine is 22 hornet. Sure they ain't the bestest but I know this hornet shoots very well.
Nice find and hope it shoots well!

Some of the folks of the CBA claimed Savage 340’s and Remington 788’s in 30-30 were very accurate cast bullet shooters in the “Hunter Class” so for what I have in this one there isn’t much of anything to loose . Just need to scratch up a mount and see if there's anyway to massage the trigger a tad as it’s rough as a cob .

This old beater would be a great gun for me to take to the Philippines ! It would be multiple purpose . Can cast for it , load for it , shoot paper with it and possibly shoot wild piggies with it in the PI 8)

.

A Savage tale:

Once upon a time, while deer hunting in Maine, I came across a fella carrying a .30-30 Savage just like that.

He was muttering to himself, all teed-off.

It seems he was carrying it with his cast boolit handloads, and filled the action with unburnt powder when he was removing the cartridge before getting into his vehicle.

It turned out that his boolit had stuck in the rifling when he worked the bolt - and both was unsure as how to get the powder out and how to remove the stuck boolit while afield.

Luckily, I had a 4-piece cleaning rod in my haversack, along with a screwdriver - and was soon able to get him back in business.

Live & learn...………….

These are still fairly common around here. Two buddies hunt the big timber in Northern WI with a Savage 340. My brother has one as well. Decent guns, quite accurate to boot. They average around $350 +/- around here.

I remember when my brother bought one years ago, I thought it was strange - why have a 'levergun cartridge' in a clumsy bolt-action...?

But then I shot it, and it really was a fun and accurate basic gun...!

If my memory is correct Years back Europeans used the 30-30 cartridge some in single shot schuetzen rifles ! I know several guys now in the CBA shoot these and or Remington 788’s in 30-30 in the Hunter class matches . Not as widely known Winchester chambered the Model 54 bolt action in 30 WCF (30-30) as well !

I'll have the old style Weaver side mount ordered from Numrich Monday . And next week if I have time I'm going to take the rifle apart and get it ready for the blueing tank .

My dad bought Savage.30 WCF 340 back in the 1950's for whitetail hunting in NY. My brother also had one. My nephew now has both. For awhile I shot my Dad's 340 and its accuracy with jacketed bullets at 100 yds. made me take notice, even though it was off bored. I have been told by successful cast bullet shooters that it is a very good cast bullet shooter.

Haven't seen one up here in the Pacific North Wet (AKA Washington) in quite a few years. When I lived in California, hardly anyone knew what it was.

I was given a Model 40 super sporter I think by my late father inlaw. He said his son had no interest and he wanted me to have it. It was a great shooter always shooting around 1 1/4 at one hundred yards.
Well my brother inlaw moved to upstate New York and wanted to go deer hunting so I gave it to him because it was his Dads rifle. He got robbed and it was gone in a year with no chance to get it back because we didn't know the serial number.Lesson learned!
Enjoy!!

My brother had one in 30-30 Ackley-Improved. It was an excellent rifle. Handloaded with spitzer bullets it performed right alongside many other 30 caliber guns.

I've had them in both .22 Hornet and .30-30. Couldn't quite fall in love with them, but deep respect for their utilitarian qualities. A man with a 340 is well armed -- and he can load Ballistic Tips in that .30WCF. Mine like the Nosler 125s.

I’m planning on shooting cast in the thing . Preferably the Ranch Dog 311-165GC or the old Lyman 311041 .

I had a 342 in 22 hornet, not supposed to be as accurate because of the barrel band. Smallest 100 yard groups I have ever shot where with that rifle shooting 34 Grain Dogtown bullets loaded over Win 680 on calm days. If wind was blowing all bets were off.

It’s a shame they quit producing W680 I liked it in the Hornet as well ! Think I still have a pound and a half .

The 340 got reblued Wednesday and today I cleaned it up and put it back together . Still has a few spots if you look close but I’m pleased with the finished product .

Now the mount I ordered from Numrich needs to arrive . I pulled a Tasco Pronghorn 3-9 I had in one of the shop show cases for sale . I’d gotten the scope on something and didn’t really want it but I suppose it’s good enough for this thing .
