what would hunt with?
In Ohio you can only use straight walled round.
I chose the .357 MAX as I have posted earlier.
Now I'm using the Sharps from Shiloh Arms in 45-70 carbine this year.

Straight wall rifle 45-70
Straight wall revolver .45 colt
Bottle neck rifle 30-06
I know old and boring. But they are all still around because they simply work.

Straight walls I'm limited to .357 Mag and .45-70.

I don't know what your .357 Max is chambered in but the Shiloh Sharps is probably more fun, don't you think?

Re: what would hunt with?
Wow, so many choices!
The .38-55 Ballard is a performer, as is the .40-70 Sharps Straight. For thump, .50-70 Government or .577 Snider. For a little less thump, .56-50 Spencer. Why not invoke the memories of our forebears? The "Old Dead Guys" had some great hunting juju.

Re: what would hunt with?
If I ever find some good hunting grounds in OH again I'll be using my Sharps 45-70 or Marlin 450.

.44 Mag, .45-70, .480 Ruger, .327 Federal, or if a pistol is allowed, .357 or .45 Colt. I think I could down a deer with any of those straight wall cartridges.

Re: what would hunt with?
I always wanted to hunt with my 357 Max Contender (pistol), and so that is what I'd use. It seems to be more of a 'challenge' than a 45-70. NOT that I want it to be so much of a 'challenge' that I'm not sure I'd humanely bag the game, but seriously - any 0.458" chunk of metal (or close to that) that blows through the thorax of a game animal is going to clearly result in a humane and easy kill. It is what every 44 Mag, 45 Colt, 444 Marlin, 45-70, and most muzzleloaders have been doing for over a century.
The '38 caliber' projectiles are more of a challenge, but certainly 'humane' - if you punch the thorax with one, especially if you hit the heart or a 'great vessel', you will have a downed game animal within a few seconds.
So, I'd use the 357 Maximum.
Either will do quite will, though....!

Re: what would hunt with?
Five years ago when the straight wall cartridge thing went into effect I killed a Big Doe at the end of My property with My Marlin 1895 45-70. one shot no problem. I think the Speer 300gr slug is in orbit and I hope to see it come down before long........................... .

Re: what would hunt with?
I have several rifles that meet them specifies but I usually hunt with my 1886 Winchester in 45-90. It's an octagon barreled, full magazine rifle made in 1916. I put a Marbles tang sight on it and it shoots pretty good.

Having several levers that use straight walled cases , that would be a hard decision to make.

Re: what would hunt with?
First four years of ohio rifle season i used marlin 444 LGs. Last year i used a RARR in 450BM, it worked but i am not a bolt gun fancier.
This year i will be back to a Marlin (glenfield actually) LG chambered in 410. Thanks to JES my 410 had a fully rifled barrel and will pitch a 260 LWN slug at 1,700 fps.

Re: what would hunt with?
Only straight wall we are allowed to hunt with is 10,12,20 shotguns for deer, as for yotes & groundhogs any cartridge up to .25 and less than 100 grain bullets.

Re: what would hunt with?
41 mag in revolver, 41 mag, 444, or 45/70 in straight wall. Bottle neck 6.5x55, .264 win mag, or 30.06 but also would like to get a chance to wack a bambi with my 250 savage 110, or my 7mm-08 pistol.

Re: what would hunt with?
You didn't mention what you're hunting, but guessing maybe whitetail deer?
If so, my choice would be the .38-55 caliber myself. I've taken a number of mule deer with the .38-55 and 255 gr. cast bullet, and it has no problem doing the job.

Re: what would hunt with?
If you need a longer shot, I thought my .444 with green box 240s or the 45-70 with 300gr Federal shot reasonably flat to 200ish yards....

Pigs in Ohio? Is the 38-55 one of the legal guns? It's not quite a "straight wall"

Nothing, I only listed what I own. 16 is legal but hardly ever see them around here anymore.

Re: what would hunt with?
I've always been fascinated by the .357 Max. Do you have a long gun chambered for it? When NEF was still making the handi Rifle there were quite a few people running a chamber reamer in a .357 Mag and turning it into a Max. If you looked at the data some were sharing they claimed to be getting performance out of the converted Handi rifle that was neck and neck to a .35 Remington.

Re: what would hunt with?
Neither is a .45-70 (.500" base and .475" neck), .444 (.469" base and .455" neck), or numerous other "straight wall cartridges". I believe most states with this rule allow for a tapering straight wall, and simply want to avoid bottleneck cartridges. .38-55 (.422" base and .396" neck)41 Redhawk wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2019 1:51 pmPigs in Ohio? My Max was rebored from a .357 NEF. Shots great. Myself and my son took deer with it last season.

Re: what would hunt with?
Hands down, the 38-55. No matter if it's a rifle or carbine, I much prefer it to 45-70 for deer.
