The FIRST Indescretion of 2019 !

#1 Post by 6pt-sika » Wed Jan 02, 2019 12:42 pm

Just won a circa 1885 Parker Grade 2 12 gauge top lever hammer gun . Gun in need of some care , had a bad break in the wrist it appears many many years ago . It's missing the original hammer retaining screw on the right hammer I believe and the barrels need a rebrowning resto .It's got 30" barrels and the figure in the butt is pretty great . Got it relatively cheap so was willing to take a chance !

Maybe it's just me...

But if you could carefully "time" all those screws so all the slots aligned with the angle of the wrist, it sure would improve the look; then add a couple of delicate carved scrolls, and voila -- it's still a repair, but a higher-classed one.

As far as timing you may very well be correct . BUT , I wouldn’t think about trying to turn those screws I doubt seriously that they’d all be in time and TIGHT . Tight is far more important to me then timed screw heads .

Judging by the assumed age of the wrist repair I'd like to think thats the factory original stock , I'll find out yeah or nay once it gets here and I take the screw out of the trigger guard and carefully move it enough to see what serial number is stamped under the trigger guard .

The second one has a small crack at the back of the left lock , gonna need to go talk nicely to a Parker friend that does most of our more in depth stockwork .

Yes. And THAT'S why "timing the screws" is an almost lost art... A slight amount of material is removed either from the screw, or from the piece, so the screw is both timed and tight.

My Dad replaced the stainless rail on his 30' (at the water line) Chris Craft one summer and my twin and I (a righty & lefty) got the job of timing each screw every 3" over the entire 33' length it took from bow to stern, each side, port & starboard. That chewed up a couple of days, let me tell you, but often just trying 2 or 3 different screws results in one that is close enough to work without forcing it.

Good luck if you ever do try that...

FWIW , Grade 2 , GH’s and EH’s are all considered st the same level . What I need is a nice DH 2 frame 10 gauge with 30” barrels . I like hammer guns just fine but my preference is hammerless

6pt, you are to Parkers what MarlinMan is to Ballards here. A blessing on both of you.
In the 19th century, those wrist strengthening plates -matched pairs -- were an option on best-quality big-bore double rifles, and often called "Selous Plates" after the great Frederick Courtney Selous.

Very interesting Bill... Never knew that, and I had to look it up some more...

Here's an image of a Webley .400/.350 single shot with those added.

Thank you ! But the quality of his Ballard’s far surpasses most of my Parker accumulation out of my twenty or so only perhaps three or four of them are collector quality . The others are honest used or slightly mistreated examples .

I’m going to be quite intrested seeing how both these 12 gauge hammer guns do with my homecast Lyman sabot slugs as well as handloaded 0 and #1 buckshot . I expect both these guns to be on the tight side of things .

Again on GB and again I made an offer and the seller accepted . I'll get payment out first thing in the AM .

The repair stock gun appeared today . Unscrewed the trigger guard and checked the number stamped in the stock and they matched I’m glad to say .

I scrubbed the inside the barrel and wiped it out theres light to possibly medium pitting . The barrels ring , so I wanna shoot it a bit . The retainer for the lever doesn't always work so I'll eventually replace or fix that and hopefully find a correct hammer retaining screw for the right hammer . So up until I get to the point of pulling the action apart the stock will remain as is . When I pull the action down for a cleaning and to fix the lever retainer I suspect I'll get my stock guy to check it out and see what he thinks . I suspect he's going to tell me to clean it and shoot as is . I have thoughts of getting my gunsmith buddy to redo the barrels to bring the damscus pattern back out but then again I might leave them alone . Truth be told I think I have 5 or 6 Damascus barreled guns that could use the same process

Double edged sword- keep it as is or a full restoration.
One hand the wear and dings & scratches proves its heritage the other hand it sure would be gorgeous with fresh finish, newly etched barrels and re color case!

The word “restoration” for some reason just doesn’t set well with me as far as guns are concerned . Nothing against your thoughts on the subject I just don’t like the word in reference to Firearms . For many years I’ve said I’d rather have an honest well maintained 50% gun over a full restoration gun , now granted this one is a good bit less then 50% . I scrubbed some on the barrels inside and out , they look way better inside and some for the outer area . I can most likely get the barrels to a point I can live with by scrubbing with 0000 steel wool and Hoppes . Then all I’ll need is a replacement part that holds the lever to the right when the guns cracked open and a hammer screw . I just might go to the club tommorrow and shoot atleast one round of skeet with the old gun .

Went out thirty minutes ago and tried my handloads with 8 birdshot to make sure the seats don’t let loose on recoil . Then I tried my handloaded 0 Buck at 25 and 45 yards . The 45 yard right barrel wasn’t worth posting but the other three weren’t to bad .

Indiscretion number two finally arrived yesterday after taking the USPS 7 days to go 165 miles via PRIORITY MAIL and to top that off about six inches of the barrels were sticking out the box . But amazingly it doesn’t appear to have gotten any new marks from the trip . This one bed a Grade 2 #2 frame 12 gauge from 1884 while the earlier one also a Grade 2 12 gauge and from 1884 is on a #1 frame .

Incidentally the lever on the 1 frame didn’t wanna stay open when it first arrived but you could feel it trying to set . So some judicious use of brake cleaner and a tiny pick cleared that up . Still need a hammer retaining screw for one side . But I believe it’ll be okay . The grade two needs a crack in the stock to be addressed before I start shooting it much and I may mill about an 1/8” off the muzzle to do away with the nick in the end .

Made two more indescretions last week a circa 1889 Parker DH 10 gauge 3 frame with 32" barrels and a LC Smith 20 gauge 28" ejector gun .

The DH is going to need some work first and foremost a stock as it doesn't have a D grade stock on it at the moment but rather and E or N grade . Also someone in their infinite wisdom saw fit to rust blue the barrels or atleast I assume they were rust blued as the guy I'm getting it from if pretty knowledgable and he said the barrels still ring true so I think its fairly safe to assume they weren't salt blued . Anyway if I can get the Damascus pattern back out and maybe put a pad on the stock its wearing right now it might just do until I can find an old D grade stock .

The little LC Smith was in a fire proof safe in a fire on the 4th of July last year . And amazingly it came out relatively well , the case color is still there somewhat on the action , the barrels could stay as are but I think I'll get my buddy to rust blue them and the wood after cleaning doesn't look terribly bad I may just try some Tung Oil on it and leave it at that . I had kinda gotten away from buying Smith's but this one came at a price I couldn't turn down so now I have a 1928 Parker VHE 20 , a 1926 Fox Sterlingworth 20 and now this LC Smith Field Grade 20 gauge ejector gun incidently all three are 28" .

I coulda hooked you up a year or so ago . I "had" a pair of Fox Sterlingworth 20's the 28" gun mentioned earlier and a 26" first year production gun that was in very decent shape . But that one went on GB and I made a modest profit .

I will say this , I found the 28" Sterlingworth easier to shoot well than the 26" gun I sold . For some reason that shorter barreled gun was awful whippy . It however would've made a wonderfull grouse gun if I still hunted them .

Well I've not received my DH 10 gauge yet , hopefully end of the week or early next week !

The little LC Smith 20 might go down the road a friend is salivating over it .

And I've run across a top lever Grade 0 or 1 10 gauge with 34" barrels that intrests me . But I need to get some more info on it before I make a move .

The DH 10 is coming from a guy in middle MI . He wasn't able to get it to the UPS until Thursday what with that holiday last Monday and weather conditions . So if the UPS tracking is correct I should have it Tuesday . 8)

Hate to say it but I have my eye on one more Parker . Its a circa 1887 0 grade 10 gauge #4 frame with 34" barrels . We will see if I can negotiate my way into that one or not . I suspect a 20 gauge LC Smith might be part of the deal or get dealt to a third party for players to be named later
