So how do you explain Hitler and Mussolini's support for Franco's Nationalists against the leftist Republicans who were supported by socialist International Brigades and the Soviets?

Terminology gets blurred when only viewed one-dimensionally. At a minimum one needs the two 'Nolan Square' dimensions.

The real spectrum is the continuum of individual liberty. From a central point, the further left one goes (not necessarily "liberal", especially not in the classic sense), the less individual freedom one supports. The further right one goes (not necessarily "conservative"), the more individual liberty one supports. Or, more accurately, the further down one goes, the more statism they support, whether it be socialism, communism, fascism, monarchies, theocracies, etc. The further up one goes, the more individual liberty one supports.

So, it is not unusual, and actually happens often, that two competing leftist/statist notions fight one another. What you rarely ever see is two truly liberty-loving notions fight one another. By the very definition, those who truly support individual liberty have a "live and let live" mentality.

There are only so many perjuritive names you can use and still sound educated. 8) 8) I will opine that, in an argument, the first person uses Nazi is the loser.
