For Memorial Day -- "Leave Flags for Our Vets"

#1 Post by Old No7 » Mon May 14, 2018 6:55 am

My wife and I first did this a few years ago, but then others in the family did the annual task of planting the flowers at my late Dad's grave site for Memorial Day.

We had the duty (an "honor", actually...) again this year, so when we bought a flag for his marker, we bought many extras. In this image you can see my Dad's to the left, and an unknown (to us) vet on the right -- but his marker now has a flag.

As we drove over to the other side of the cemetery to leave a flag for my late uncle, who served as a combat medic in WWII, we'd randomly stop and add flags for some of those veterans whose flag-holders were empty. The veterans groups and boy scouts in that city do put out flags for all the vets who are buried in the "veterans section", but it's the other vets randomly scattered throughout who likely get missed because there's no one left to remember them...

But we took a moment to remember some of them.

Anyway, I think we'll do a web search for a bulk buy of flags next year, and leave twice as many as we did yesterday.

It was a "random act of flags" that felt really good to do.

That is a nice gesture to those who served. Lest we forget.

Locally the Scouts do this. I'm not sure how much longer that tradition will last with the recent changes in scouting. It's getting more and more liberal, slipping away from its traditional roots.

Used to do this with the kids when they were young, going out with the American Legion, planting flags at all the cemeteries in the county, including the Confederate graves with their flag. It was an all day event

Good man, Darryl. I have a friend in England who does this for the American boys buried near what was a World War II airfield.
Sid Mauldin, the brother of Bill Mauldin -- yes THAT Bill Mauldin -- lies very near my kin here in Alamogordo. You can bet I'll be sure he has a flag.
