Terrific rifle. I was always partial to the Winchester style but admit that the first time I picked up the Marlin cowboy I was very pleasantly surprised. A very nice balance of the right amount of weight to absorb recoil in a still very portable package. Doubt that the combination could ever be beat.

And for one of the mostly lurkers, I'm glad to see you back posting again. We all missed your interesting posts.

Enjoy that Marlin!!

Nice. I remember seeing a tuned, gently used one in 38-55 in a Raleigh store about 15 years ago. It was a sweet rifle. $700 seemed like a whole lot of money for a Marlin then

yep i own a marlin 336w with octagon barrel. I love octagon barrels like yours. my rossi 1892 ad henry pump action 22 are octagon . my only round barrel is my henry .22 lr lever. Just a thought while here, why are some guns half rd and half octagon? what is the reasoning behind that? I admit , I like the heavier feel of marlins over winchesters.

They don't quite go together but the only picture I have of my Marlin 45-70, this one's an LTD III with an 18" barrel instead of a Cowboy but it's one of my favorite "Woods Gun".

I'll have to match it up with a better looking pistol! :D

I like that too. Be a neat rig in my locale.
I have the old straight grip, 2/3 mag with a 22"RB. Its a nice balance for a 45-70.
I'm thinking the short octagon barrel would balance out about even too.

Nice pics. Always wanted an octagon barreled lever. Do you still have the 3" 45 Colt Storekeeper?
2ndovoc, the 18" octagon looks so right with the full length tube. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Great pics of your 45/70 CB.

I have a straight stocked Marlin 1895 45/70 and also a 30-30 CB that's great to shoot. My strong side shoulder is more recoil sensitive after rotator cuf surgery a few years ago, so I don't shoot the 45/70 much anymore.

Thanks, I did something bad to my right shoulder last May, was pulling a starter rope on a engine and it kicked back.
I still don`t have full motion in it but it is slowly getting better, I think.
Don`t know if I can shoot either.

I have it's baby brother! Picked up a 1894 Marlin 44Mag that'd seen better days and converted it over to a 45Colt by dropping in a "Cowboy" barrel and cut it down to 17". But, I slimmed that forend down to a skinny little Winchester forend! I really need to get back on that project...

Thanks Griff sounds like a neat rifle, that`s one thing I like about the cowboy it has a slim forearm on it.
I love my Browning 86 rifle and carbine and the old 94 30-30 but this Marlin is just so light in comparison. :)

Those are the most prone to breakage parts, I`ve had the lever screw loosen a couple times and if ya loose that your up the creek.
