Woods loafin'

Post by OldWin »

Got out of work this morning and thought it may be a good snowshoeing day.
Man was I right. Get a day like this about every three years. Headed up to the lot to look around. There is about 2.5 feet of snow with a thin crust. Even with 9/30's I was only sinking about an inch and a half. An even 20 degrees, sun shining, smooth going. Don't get no better. Felt like a .357 day so I drug out the 92 Rossi and my S&W 19.

Yeah, a good day in the woods makes winter palatable.
It's gonna cool back off here tomorrow. Not -30 cool, but below zero. We got to -15 back before Christmas. I'm sure we will dip down more this month. It's not bad as long as the wind ain't blowin'.

Yep that dern wind is the killer, we got about 5 inches of snow mixed with some rain a couple weeks ago that made a crust so I`m sure we could walk on top with snow shoes.
Deer are having a hard time though, they break through, wolves are probably having a hay day.

I noticed the same. Deer have to yard for the most part. The coyotes (ours are big) are able to stay on top with the crust. That's bad, bad. Usually it's in the spring when the snow gets meally that they reek havoc. Really should get out and try to shoot some.
Good news is, it's legal to hunt em with IR scopes and a can now.

I had to change the trigger in mine to hit anything offhand. They just don't steady down for me like an old Winchester carbine. The better trigger did help though. Little thing don't weigh nothin'.

I've got one of the old '72 style, 22" straight grip 95's. It's a pretty serious rifle for the size and portability. I think it carries easier than my 71.

Excuse me Pitchy and Jay............can I get a word in here???!!!!! :D

Jay....your living large dude! Through most of my life there was nothing better than walking in the snow covered woods with a favorite sixgun and usually a 32-20 rifle in the off hunting season. Don't do it much anymore, maybe once a year as I have to go upstate to even see snow.....yea, al gores warming issues......

Nice pics ...thanks.-------6

This is as close to woodsloafing in the snow watching wildlife I got today. "Apple" started barking and did not like the idea of deer on her turf.

I"ve had so many handguns I can't remember them all, but one I never bought and want again is one of those sweet 2.75 inch model 19's. Looks great for woods bumming. If it warms up above the danger level and can get my legs going the right direction, I want to take my little Rossi in 44-40 for a walk. Nothing is as nice carrying in the woods as a little lever gun.

Hey Jack,
Man, you got a nice place bud. Nice to have "steaks on the hoof" right in the yard. :D
Yeah, we are lucky to have a couple hundred acres to play on.

WWG,
Yeah, I like my K-frames for sure. Usually, I carry a Colt SAA and Winchester 38-40 92, but today just felt like a .357 day. I really like 92's for a carrying carbine.

Jay, I just walked over to the back door to see if my carbine is still there, thought some how you came and got it. Right now it is full of 158 grain cast and some Unique waiting for a wild dog to check out my chicken pen. They do carry real nice don't they?

Hey Jerry,

Haha yeah. It's the only Rossi I've owned. A buddy of mine had it and I just had to have it. Never had a .357 carbine before, and I gotta say, it's a ball. It's crazy accurate and easy to shoot. I been shooting 158gr RN Rainier plateds over 6.5gr Unique for plinking. Saves my lead for my oldies and they load slick and clean on my RL550.
They muzzle about 950 from my 2nd Gen SAA and about 1350 from the Rossi 92.

Brought back a lot of winters past.
We used to run around in the winter all the time when we was kids. Used to stay at my buddies grandfather's camp all the time and ran around with lanterns half the night.
Here I am at the ripe old age of 17, packing an old .41 Blackhawk and my grandfather's old High Standard model B cross draw.
I was a well heeled hick in training.

I forgot it was in the safe, but I found my daughters carbine, She's 22 now, but three years ago she bought herself a camping, hiking home defense gun, a large loop Rossi Trapper in .357. The little gun feeds everything we've found to run through it with the exception of 148gr. .38 wadcutters which I was sure wouldn't feed but a guy's gotta try. These things are a hoot to shoot and about the only gun she's really comfortable shooting, probably because of the light recoil even with magnum loads and that she picked it out herself.

In the last six years or so, we've seen the steady increase of critter sign, Wolves, coyotes, cougar and bear tracks around the cabin and were I hunt. I feel better if she's out walking the dogs on one of the trails if she takes her carbine with her, I bought her a Ruger single six .32 mag when she was 13 but she never carried that, mostly sit's in the safe unless I take it out to ventilate some vermin. She doesn't carry her carbine as much either now that she's married and lives next door, my son in law carries his own guns so she doesn't. Her mother does the same thing, I've bought her mother many guns over the years and she has hardly ever carried any of them. she say's that's what I'm for. Why do so many women do this.

I reckon that I just have a hard time placing one over the other as my favorite woods totin' long gun. My 1917 Winchester 1892 32wcf 24 inch rifle I bought from my uncle in 1954, or the Rossi SRC .357 20 inch I bought from a friend in 2007.

You telling us you play in temperatures of -7....-20...? That would kill me. The coldest I've ever been in was -15 while elk hunting in Colorado and the air seemed like it was frozen....ice crystals in the air.

Right now is bitter bitter bitter cold at 18 above and it's supposed to go down to 12 tomorrow night. I had to split some big logs today so they will last through the night and it took me 25 pulls on the log splitter. Should have just done it by hand.

Seldom does it get to 0 around here...coldest I've seen it in 60 years is 8 below.
