Pickles and rifles

Post by dkmlever »

I would not have believed it but it happened. Out on a hunt this week with my buddy who loves pickles. He brought a whole jar of dills with him and they spilled on the back seat of my truck....right where my rifle was laying. Well pickle juice takes the blueing right off your rifle! OOPS, lesson learned! A cold blueing project is in my future!

Wow.... :|

Isn't it just 'vinegar' or some weak acid...?

Pizza at a friends house, got home started to put my SW25-5 by the bed noticed something black on it.
Wiped it off a piece of black olive, white steel where there used to be bluing.
Cleaned it used degreasers but I am still having trouble getting cold blue to stay on that dime sized spot.

That's enough to pee off the Good Humor man. Pickle smell lasts forever. Your buddy must be a really good buddy as you don't sound overly peed off. What kind of a rifle? Soon blues are hard to match up.---6

Among other things, I make choko(chayote) and onion pickles.

My use by date is twelve months after I make it. At eighteen months the steel lids are seriously corroded.

With the vinegar in it, I wouldn't let it come anywhere near carbon steel.

Actually, it's very nice to add to cheese and cold meats, but not to firearms.

All the best, Mark

Not surprised at all............

Vinegar is commonly mentioned on all the blackpowder forums as the easy means to strip blueing off a "new replica revolver" to distress it and make it look aged.

As for the Cold Blue...

I'd highly recommend Brownell's Oxpho-Blue Creme.

It has "cling" (slightly thinner than mayonnaise) which works great on the round surfaces commonly found on a gun, and I've found it blends in really well too. It beats all the other cold blue formula's I've tried.

Good luck!

After a "buddy" dumped a stinky drink in my vehicle, Im staunchly "HELL no, you aren't bringing stuff like that in my vehicle!"

Jars of pickles go on the floor or in the bed of the PU. Guns go on top of the seats, alone...

Acidic, salty, fermented, or any other foods do not mix with with steel. ALSO, brass cleaner will mess up bluing quite badly. Brass bead front sights can be cleaned carefully with some 800 grit or higher if possible wet sanding paper. Glue a small piece to a small wood block for control and be very careful. You can get a very shiny brass bead out of it without damage to the gun. Paint it with clear coat nail polish that you borrowed from your wife.
