A lever with a pistol grip (Part one…)

Hi folks,

Some of you will say: “Lever rifle are just as good as they are.”, “Do not touch them.” “Who are you to do such a thing?”… I won’t blame you.

Hereafter is my latest invention (see Attachment)

It combines the following advantages:
• Pistol grip: better handling.
• Collapsible stock: you may adjust the pull to your size
• Picatinny rail: add what you feel like.
• Lever: faster than a bolt.
• The pistol grip and the lever are easily adaptable on any Mossberg 464 on the market.

Do not hesitate to say what you think - bad or good - and please, do not forget to poll !

I always like to try different things. So I'd shoot it for a test run. But honestly I can't see myself owning one. I am too much of a traditionalist.

But not ARs, probably feels a bit out of place with them too, though.

Then again, I don't think I'd have one, can't really wrap your thumb around the pistol grip when firing and working the lever. Seems to me that would slow things down quite a bit. YMMV

My thoughts?? Mmmmmmmm. For starters, I've been in this game for so long I'm reluctant to change.......it's one of those things that happen as we age. But......there just might applications where this works and I do believe our very own Doc has a similar equipped rifle. I would try it but in the meantime I prefer the old style pistol grip.------6

I would love to have one of those. That adjustable stock is a wonderful invention for us grandpa types who need to fit up several ages of younger shooters. My present arsenal has only a pellet rifle and an AR with that capability to fit the littler kids, so how do they learn to appreciate leverguns? I would prefer a straight stock, but wouldn't pass on that configuration right there.

I like it.

Not 'traditional', but in some situations may be far more PRACTICAL than either a blued-steel-and-wood levergun or an EBR.

Like my 'Night Scout' leverguns, they may be way more practical than a night-vision-equipped AR, or a 'regular' levergun.

I bought my first center fire Lever gun in 69 so I've tried out a few since then
the scope is almost a necessity any more past 75 yards, its not a AR & it has a Lever

The younger crowd need new things to get them into guns and if thats what it takes i say go for it. its like the first side ways motors in cars i said WTF but now thats just the norm.If it helps keep people into the sport and gives new life to old ideas its OK by me. In 10 years we nite not think nothing of that.like the brake on a winchester 94 and plastic stocks replacing wood on the levers.nothing new to see that now.If it keeps the sport fresh and alive for the gun guys of the future we will just have to go along with it.

Well, you asked for honesty. Personally I think it's frigging ugly . No offense intended. Looks like you put thought into. the design. I really don't think the average lever gun needs to handle better or shoot faster. Most love the way they carry and shoulder. I do like the rails and have them on two of my levers. I even changed to a larger loop on one. I wouldn't want an adjustable stock, just one made to fit. Of course, yours could be shared by different size shooters.
That said, if thats what you like...go for it.

I'm sure some would like it. Seeing as I don't like conventional pistol grips on a levergun, I'm out.
I grew up shooting straight grip levers so it's what feels natural to me. An AR feels strange also and I can't steady down offhand like I can with a rifle with a conventional stock.

I agree with Sixgun. There are already thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of lever guns out there that have "pistol grips"...

If one wants an AR style grip on a gun, get an AR. The Modern Sporting Rifle comes in as many configurations, calibers, and colors to fit into anybody's preferences...

The only lever action carbine that a pistol grip works on is a Model 71-348 WCF. Anything else is a sacrilege . DON'T DO IT!

The Mossberg 464 is hardly an "old lever". If there is any levergun I'd use as base stock for funky mods, it's the 464.

I have seen something like that on the web (see attached picture).
But I fear:
- During a walk, aiming from one target to another... The lever is likely to open prematurately, and you won't be able to fire
- When you fire, the rifle will kick back and the lever will certainly open by itself. I think it could be sometime dangerous.
But I do not know for sure.

I'm in the "pro heroin" camp. Give them a small taste of the affliction and they will start buying old winchesters and marlins soon enough.

The lever action rifle rose to height of beauty, fit and function over 100 years ago. This looks like one would have hard time reaching the hammer when gripping the pistol grip. The same can be said about a Mossberg shotgun thumb safety with a pistol grip. Not very fluid.

True. That one is no match regarding to the original model. It could never be, just because the original one made history.

But that was not my intention. I just wanted to propose something different, something you won’t fear to break or wear prematurely.

For my part, when I wake up and go to the shooting club I like to pick up the rifle that fit the mood of the day. So from time to time I am happy to pick up that “strange new model” to shoot some ammunitions and have fun. Just because it is different.

And the following day I will look to my old Winchester vintage, and I will tell to myself, “nothing but the original one!” But I think it is better not to wear that old one prematurely, and keep that great pleasure only for the greatest occasions!

Ugly but I would try it. My favorite leverguns have always been straight stock models but do to nerve damage in my right arm/hand I find I can shoot my pistol grip Marlins better. This may even improve on that.
