Quick trip to the range w/ the new Defender

Post by 2ndovc »

Had a nice break today between appointments so stopped by the range with the new 12 gage.

Image
Popped in to Walmart for a 100 round box of sissy loads, ran about forty through it before my hands and shoulder started to protest. First time out with a long gun since I got out of the hospital. Not great but a couple months ago I wouldn't have been able to shoulder it for more than a few seconds. Figure a couple times out per week should be some good physical ( and mental) therapy. :D
First time I've owned a shotgun with a Kung Fu Grip. Wasn't sure at first but it grew on me. I do like the green fiber optic front sight, but it also snaps off to use the brass bead. Controls are fine, oversize safety and the slide release is in the same place as my Model 12s, back side of the trigger guard.
Pleased with it so far.
Good day and a lot of time on my feet done wore this Old Dog out!

Just because they're sissies, is no reason to shoot them!

nice outfit with good back up

those walmart loads are the cheapest ammo around
can't buy the components for two-bits

a fun trick with those walmart loads . . .

dump the shot, insert .69 roundball, close up and

an almost perfect, and perfectly cheap slug load

almost perfect, because I favor hard cast for slugs

.

I wonder how it handles in close quarters, like inside a small home.

Could you please post who made (brand/make, model) that pumpgun (I don't recognize it), and do you know if it's made in 20ga ?

Pete,

The shotgun is made in Turkey for Winchester. Basically the 1300 re-branded. Seems to handle just fine indoors with the 20" barrel. They do make a 20 gage but not sure if they do in the same style. There is a short barrel riot style, it was $299 on sale here and the 20 was same price.

Reading Pete's post brought up a question (I haven't fired a shotgun in a long time). Muzzle blast is often a consideration for shooting indoors, in an HD situation, so how does the muzzle blast from a 12 gauge w/20" bbl. compare to say a short barreled 9mm? Or a 1911?

If this is a hijack, just slap my wrist JB...

For home defense the sissy loads will work just as well as the HI $ super tactical blow their head off ones.

Not a hijack at all. :D

I would think anything fired indoors is going to be pretty obnoxious even a .38 Spl. is really loud ( don't ask me how I know this  )! It would be a pretty significant report/flash, but in a high stress situation where one would actually have to pull the trigger I doubt he or she would even notice. I know from years of hunting, mostly from blinds that I don't remember the sound of any shot. Selective perception, or whatever the proper term is.

tman, I agree with you. A face full of light shot at such a close range would be a pretty good deterrent to any further shenanigans from an uninvited house guest. However I don't wish to personally test that hypothesis. The last two rounds are for those stubborn Zombie types just in case anyway.

Doc,

I could be wrong but I believe the correct term would be auditory exclusion. High stress situations and hunting situations one usually does not get the ringing in the ears (not that it doesn't do damage I am sure). At least that has been my limited experience in such situations.
