Lightin' out for Texas

Post by M. M. Wright »

Most of us here like old cowboy pictures so here is one of my Great Uncle Bill Wright. He was a silversmith in Vinita, I. T.

Image

He is probably just lighting out for Texas after killing a man who was trying to kill him with a Winchester as Uncle Bill was getting off the train in Chelsea, I. T. I know he used a pistol, I assume the one he's carrying, to defend his life. It was ruled self defense but I think to avoid trouble with the other family, he went to Texas for a spell.

Great family story and photo, thanks for sharing, I'd love to know what happened to his pistol.

Outstanding ! It looks like he had a nice Ivory-handled SAA Colt .45, there.

Do you know when (year) that event occurred ?

Me too!

It must have been 1903 or 4? It was just after the Dawes Commission left Vinita and moved to Chelsea. The shooting was over filing on a particular piece of land.

M.M,
Very cool picture but......why do you suppose the guy with the Winchester was trying to shoot your g.u.? :D Maybe he showed the bad guys girlfriend that he had a bigger "gun". :D ----6

No 6, the guy with the Winchester told Uncle Bill that if he filed on a certain piece of land that he would kill him so when Uncle Bill took the train to Chelsea where the Dawes Commission was allotting land the guy took a shot at Uncle Bill and missed.

Ain't that somethin! So I guess what they say that it was a lot easier getting killed back in the day than what it is today is true. ----6

I don't know. That's so many generations ago that I don't know many of those cousins. I guess I should look them up and ask.

Great photo and story. Even if you can't get your hands on the sixgun I'd still be interested to know what caliber and all it was.
