Try this site as well. http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com/sea ... id=1259079
405's will work well. No need for gas check bullet up to 1400fps.
Do you plan on using black powder or smokeless?
60/40 is an expensive way to go. You can add pure lead to the mix.
Clip on wheel weights is a cheaper way if you can get them. They don't need to be that hard, depending on what you are hunting, 12 to 15bhn should do for 1300 to 1400fps if you have a good bullet fit and good lube.
What do you plan on hunting?

Here is just about the best site I have come across with regards to lead bullets. http://www.lasc.us/LASC_Article_Index.pdf
That will keep you busy reading for quite a while. A ton of info there.

Hi Mate.
Try the "ADI Powders Handloaders Guide" (google it and download it as a PDF) to get some loads for your 45-70. Look under single action rifle loads. There is load data for 405gn lead projectiles and AR 2207 powder. I have used these loads with lead projectiles in my original 1886 Winchester in 45-70 to shoot goats, but I have not tried it on Deer. I am not casting for the 45-70 because I still have a stack of commercially made projectiles I am still using. Use wheel weights for your casting if you can get them. Don't worry too much about expansion because a 458 cal hole is pretty big anyway.
Regards.
Pop.

Depending on where you are in Oz you may be able to locate a company that can supply an alloy suitable for bullet making. This might be easier starting out but once you know what you need you can go scrounging for the right components and make your own.

2207 is a good powder for loads in the 45/70. Unless you know how strong your action is I would be limiting loads to 'Trapdoor' level loads.

Ideally check barrel and throat dimension before buying a mould. If that's a bit too much at this stage, see if you can find other users with the same rifle and ask what works for them. The Castboolits site is a good site for info.
