Rest In Peace Ralph Stanley

Post by PaperPatch »

Bluegrass pioneer Ralph Stanley passed away a few days ago at age 89. I'd post a link but my tablet won't let me.

If you watched... O Brother Where Art Thou, his piece ran during the closing credits.

He is my absolute favorite bluegrass/country gospel singer and I was saddened to hear of his death. He will be greatly missed. I am happy to have many albums by him and his music will live on.

Yep. He was a giant in bluegrass, though small in stature. He almost stopped singing after Carter died in 1966.

All of the pioneers and originators of bluegrass music are about all gone now. I consider those who were performing in the 1940's to be the true pioneers. The only one left that I can think of is Mac Wiseman. I'm going to Nashville in a couple of weeks to the Ryman bluegrass concert series (I go every year) to see Rhonda Vincent, and Mac will be making a guest appearance with her along with Jesse McReynolds (of Jim and Jesse). By my definition Jesse is not a bluegrass pioneer since he and Jim did not begin recording until 1952. I probably should cut him a little slack though.
