Doing something I dont want to do.

Post by jnyork »

I'm 75 now, and it's time to thin the herd, I am going to spend the summer getting rid of a lot of stuff that I've collected over the years that has meaning only to myself and will be thrown away or yardsaled by my ignorant stepkids when I kick off. Lots of books, shooting stuff, old war souveniers, etc, maybe a few guns. Makes me feel like I am taking my old dog out to put him down. :(

Anyone else in this situation?

I'm just a couple years shy of 60 and I have been getting rid of "stuff", for the last several years. It took over a year to go through all of my dad's stuff when he passed. I want things to be easy for my son when it's my time.

Just keep telling yourself they're just "things" and "stuff" and you'll have your priorities in line.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

That doesn't sound like fun.
My dad's the same age and I know he's going to be dumping his rental properties soon. Just not up for taking care of them anymore. He hasn't said anything about getting rid of anything else but I've noticed every time I'm over there he sends something home with me.

Also, at least for me when someone gives you something that has some meaning or value to them it means much more than finding it in a box after they're gone.

jnyork, I can relate. Just turned 74 a month ago, and knowing most of my "stuff" will be of little or no great interest to my kids and grandkids, I've told them to take what personal things my daughter's and son's families might want, and have a farm auction for all the rest. Don't know about the rest of the continent, but here in the "uplands" of Arkansas, farm auctions are very successful. My daughter will want all the things relating to family history, photos, documents etc.

Most of my antiques, artwork, handmade items and furniture will not float their respective boats and home decor, ...and the "boomsticks" handguns and fodder to feed them all will be of very little interest to my kids and their progeny. Son-in-law is an Aussie and confirmed liberal, so I know none of the implements of my greatest interest will be heading to Austin. My son was raised in a family with no great interest in guns or hunting, except the annual blasting during mourning dove season. I've gifted him with several fine guns over the years and think he believes those few are all he will ever need. He might surprise me though and choose to take others of my precious "collectables" to his Denton home. His two boys are interested, as most boys are, but generally, their firearms interest has been satisfied with playing computer games. My kids and their spouses have both been successful in raising my three grandsons and a granddaughter into their early teen years to be good students, successful athletes and pretty all 'round fine kids. So can't fault them for choosing to live as they are. Love the whole bunch, I do!

Anyhow, what they don't care to cart back to the great state of Texas will be taken care of at the auction. Firearms and related items will be taken to my dear friend (gunsmith and dealer) to be sold, and profits derived from said sales will be divided and mailed to my kids. That's my solution, ...best I can come up with. Better than most other of the so-called "plans" in my gypsy life!

Easy way to do it......reloading stuff and supplies...right here...free advertising..but......you can't ask full price unless it's a hard to get item. Sell it for half or two thirds of what's it's worth and give them free shipping....most guys cannot pass up a bargain. Did you ever notice my stuff sells within a few days?

Hunting clothes and whatnot???? Throw em out or let's the dogs sleep on em. It's a rich society today, no one wants other people's clothes. It's like trying to sell an old set of dishes.

Magazines or books.....sell em by the pound...maybe .20.

Good quality high dollar guns go to Rock Island Arsenal or Julia's. If the guns are $5,000 or more, they don't even charge commission.

Regular guns like 336 Marlins can be sold here, Guns America, local gunshop, or your local auction house.------6

Remember, it's better to have a quick nickel than it is to have a slow dime.-----6

I thought it was just me, been down-sizing lately, been working my way down to a simple collection of a limited number of handguns and rifles (.22cal, 9mm, 38/357, .223, 12ga.)... :)

The old gamekeeper I took over from had only one gun, a single shot .410, at the time I thought that was very odd, now I'm nearing the same age as he was, I find I don't use all my guns that often and where I live a .410 and a .22 would cope with most of what I shoot.
All of my expensive guns have gone, I gave my son some of my favorites and what's left aren't worth a lot.
I'm still planning on trimming them down further to just a couple of shotguns and a couple of leveraction rifles.
I sure don't plan on dying totally gun poor, I've got to have something interestin' across my lap when I'm sitting on the porch :D

Yes. It is a quandary. I sold off a few of my old 50's British bikes, but kept one that is very dear to me. My son acknowledges that it is "cool" but he's a confirmed cager, with no interest really. I really don't know what will become of it... I hope it doesn't get sold to some "Hipster" with a "man bun" or a silly little hat and girlie jeans, who will cut it up to make it look stupid.

I have my father's, and grandfathers' guns, which I intend to gift to him here maybe next month. Otherwise I'm not sure what to do with them either.

I have a "Gun Will". Most of my guns and stuff is listed to go to specific people. My Garand to my friend, an old Marine. My 308 bolt gun goes to a Lady Elk hunter from church. My Pastor gets his choice of my handguns and as many as he wants. My reloading stuff is destined for the one reloading pal I have from church, and the rest are open to any of the huntin'/shootin' fellers at church to come get what they want...

Right now at 77I don't plan on getting rid of any guns or anything else in that line. In fact just a few weeks ago I got a good trade on a Ruger Single Six with both cylinders made in 1971. Never had one before and really really do like it with the 6 1/2 inch barrel. also had a grandson from Texas give me a new never fired model 13-4 4 inch with Eagle Secret Service grips, beautiful rosewood. so I am still gathering them in. My wife and a couple of grandsons will see that they are all passed around after I gone.

Just a thought.
Why not put some of your treasures in the classifieds here on leverguns.
I really think it is easier to part with some things if you know they are going to a good home.
Where else could you find a better home for some of your "things" than among the members of this forum.
