New 92 Quality - Rossi or Chiappa?

Post by Arminius »

Dear Sirs!

I have several LA´s ( who here hasn´t? ;-)), but I miss one with 16" barrel. I want a 92 with 16" bbl in .38/.357.

I´ve heard mixed things about Rossi´s quality, now a gunsmith said, Chiappa´s quality is also slipping. I do not know.

What do you say?

I really despise the Rossi safety, but apart from that:

which one to buy?

Thanks in advance, Hermann

rossi, take the safety out and put in a plug or a peep sight . Nate kiowa jones here sells accessories for the rossi 92 and does smooth action work or them or you can buy the cd from him and do it yourself. Change out the plastic magazine follower for an metal one :D . he did work on mine and shoots anything i put through it now.

I would LOVE to do exactly that, but sending a gun from Europe to the US and getting it back ist both costly and complicated ...

If you can work on a bicycle you can do the smoothin' up and replace the springs Nate describes on his DVD. A set of good hollow ground screwdriver tips of correct size, a drift punch of the correct size, and the action comes apart fairly easy, then it's just a couple of polishing stones (I used my knife sharpening set), the new springs, and you're golden! All for sale on his site: Steve's Gunz. Plus, then YOU'LL have the satisfaction of havin' done it yourself, and the knowledge/skill to do really thorough cleaning and maintenance.

I bought the hammer spring and ejector spring from Steve's Gunz. I made new trigger return spring. And of course I polished it up slick while I had it apart. Not only does it feed and extract smooth but it has a fine 1 lb trigger pull.. I didn't buy the CD because I have had a Winchester 92 apart several times and the Rossi didn't have any problems that I needed expert help with.. Most folks should probably buy the video ...I also didn't fool with the safety as it doesn't bother me.. I am competing with the rifle , its less than 2 years old and the blue is already wearing off and wood is getting a few dents but it's a tool ..I think the quality of the Rossi is good for the price.

I did my own upgrades on my two Rossi's, it was E-Z-Peazy.

Neither of my Rossi's needed any smoothing or spring work - so, I just changed the sights.

Replacing the bolt-top safety with Steve's is a 10-minute, kitchen table type "job", and involves only opening the bolt to expose the pin (in the bolt's locking lug recess') that holds the safety in place, and is re-used to hold the bolt peep sight in place. (IOW, a direct replacement)

The front sight blade needs only (IMO) a dollop of bright (women's ?) fingernail polish.

That said, although the Chiappa costs 2x what a Rossi costs, they're also twice as "blingy" - with brilliant case colors on the receiver & a shinier/smoother wood finish.

The price difference pays for a LOT of ammo...............

Steve would have his finger on Chiappa's pulse ( re: quality), since they asked him for advice on improving their production process - so I would respectfully ask that you have a PM chat with him about your concerns.
