Ok. So I bought a Rossi 92 in 357 mag from Buds on a whim. I started second guessing myself after reading all the horror stories online and nearly canceled my order. However it arrived yesterday and HOLY stuff!
It's awesome. Now the wood isn't great but it is fit perfectly to the gun. Only one tiny spot near the barrel band where it protrudes 1-16th of an inch. Almost negligible. The bluing is deep and prefect. There are zero gaps in the wood/metal contact surfaces. The action is slick enough to work with my pinky. It has a slight bind at closing because one lug is slightly less polished (easy fix). The trigger has zero creep and breaks cleanly at 3.8 pounds. I haven't shot it yet (broke my leg the other day). The feed gate seems to open and close easily. Few visible machining marks inside but nothing I can't polish out. Absolutely worth the $479 I paid for it. Hope it shoots as good as it feels
Don't surprise Me none....I gave mine a short rifle to My Daughter and Son in Law for a House gun. they absolutely love it. Get out and have some fun with that one. .

While you are recuperating go to Nate "Kiowa" Jones' web site order a SS spring follower cap to replace the stock plastic one, a filler for that bolt mounted safety, and his '92 DVD, slick that bad boy up and you will be amazed how that carbine runs.
And I hope you recover swiftly from you injury, I had a hard reading your post about how it happened, I had a jughead bite my pants leg pulled me from the saddle and dropped me on my head and just stood there waiting for me to get back on. I finally did when I realized how far it was back to camp.

Do give that leg ample time to heal correctly. Those leg bones are nothing to play around with.
Rossi... Funny how only the horror stories get wrote up. There are some poorly assembled rifles out there. But there are far more better ones. Everyone I have shot was working as well as any old 92 in 44 WCF I have shot. Just pay attention to bullet OAL (if you reload) and be aware some SWC shapes tend to get hung up on the entrance to the chamber. A simple bit of "sharp edge chamber" removal usualy cures it all.

Make yer own magazine follower out of a 40 S&W cartridge inside a 44 mag cartridge. Slide it inside the 44 mag empty just the right amount, solder them together, cut the head stamp end off the 44 mag shell. Works swell. Give you sompthin to do while you're healing and cussin that horse. I just got the same Rossi R92 357/38spec. in trapper length with large loop lever and saddle ring. Same experience as you..love it.

That last bit of tension at close is most likely the ejector. Before you get to polishing, check that out. They are over-sprung. Steve's Gunz has a lighter spring for that.
Glad you're happy with your purchase. I've been thinking about a 20"er myself for a while. A 180 gr. cast out of that thing will hit harder than you can imagine.

I did this to mine and made all the difference in the world. replaced safety with a peep sight and a brass bead on front sight.

I have been on the fence with one in my cart for a month now and just have not bought it. I have been thinking I need
to sell a rifle I don't use before I buy this one. If they are coming that well put together maybe I should just go ahead.

It's true, you mostly just hear about the bad ones and somewhat deserved. There was a period of time when the Rossi 92's were pretty bad. Rossi had been running on the same machinery since the mid 60's. So, by the late 80's through the 90's the machines were pretty much worn out. About all they could do was make the parts too big, hand fit when they just had to but most were just put together with really heavy springs to overcome the poor fit. Some were so stiff you had to put the buttstock over your knee just to work the lever. But, in about 2000 Rossi totally re-tooled and since then, the guns are much better.
Most of the issues you hear about now are ammo related and it's usually the 357m/38 spec or the 44mag/44 spec. Folks buy them thinking they will run on any ammo. Some do better than others depending on how the parts stack up. But, always keep in mind. These leverguns in modern straightwall pistol cals are more like semi-auto pistols. There's just some ammos they aren't going to work well with.
your post pushed me over the edge. Dropped the hammer on a 20" 357 today. I had trouble deciding between the compactness of a 16, and the balance and shootablility of a 20. Decided a 20 would be a bit quieter and went with it.
I am going to put my 24" 45 Colt up for sale to pay for this one. My wife thought it was too long and heavy and I just don't shoot enough 45 Colt to keep it around. 38/357 I shoot a good bit between the Jframe EDC and my Model 19.
My Rossi is about 12 years old, and it was one of the ones made right. I am still pleased with it.

I picked up my 20" today. I ordered it with both eyes open having owned a 45 and reading everything I could on them.
Not as thrilled with mine as you were. My stock is rather orange and the dye tends to rub off on my hands. It refused to load more then two rounds before getting stuck, loading gate was the normal stiff and sharp I read about. The stock is rather orange and tends to rub off on your hands. Wood fit was fine, it's a fun/hunting rifle after all.
I removed the stock and the spring and plastic follower and sprayed it out with brake cleaner. Now it will take rounds, however the soft points are getting mushed up pretty good on the edges of the tube. Sprayed it down with Rem oil and cycled it about 200 times and went to the range.
The grin started with my first shot, Federal 357/158's. The next four rounds were right at 6 o'clock and just a touch left. I used a center hold for the next five and chewed out a nice little group at 25 yards. Tried some 38 Special, hit low but still nice little groups. I didn't have long so spent 5 rounds shooting the rocks and debris on the backstop.
Action is still pretty stiff, but fed everything without a bobble. I am resisting the urge to tear it down like I did my 45. I want to put 500 or so rounds through it and see how well it slicks up on it's own. Then I will consider it. The stock will get work though. Going to strip it and put a real rubbed oil finish on it.
My daughter has not even seen it yet and is already trying to claim it.

I am convinced Rossi uses something like an alcohol based stain to save time assembling these guns. Then, it appears the only finish it gets is the oil they use when they bag it just before it goes in the box. Some are oiled better than others but like you have found some not so much.
