4 gauge

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Does anyone have or can point me to the load data for a 4 gauge shotgun shell?

No, I don't have a punt gun.

I did secure a 4 gauge hull though. I would like to load it and put it in my ammunition collection. I did a quick search on yahoo and google and came up with zip.

Thanks!

My Dixie catalog lists a 4 gauge muzzleloader service charge as 273 grains / 10 drams of powder and 1531 grains / 3 1/2 oz. of shot.

If I wanted it for static display I'd reprime it fill it with sand and crimp it .

Same here; I'd only load a round if I intended to shoot it.

FWIW, I'd just make up a dummy round, stuffing it with a charge of Cream-of-Wheat (or case tumbler medium), under the shot charge/wads, instead of powder charge - then crimp the case closed.

Nobody w/o a gun will be the wiser, and it'll fit in seamlessly with a shotshell collection.

You'll blow yer hand off, kid :o I like the creme of wheat or sand idea instead.

273 grains?!?

Yeah, no way I'm putting a mini-grenade in the display (if I have nothing to shoot it), and with my back, I wouldn't shoot that for love nor money!

I like the sand/cream of wheat ideas. Will figure out the weight of the powder plus shot, then duplicate it with inert materials.

Thanks fellas! :D

I wouldn't bother with the correct filler weight - just go for a volume that will fill the powder chamber enough to support the shot charge (and both it's over/under wads) to a position/height that's affords an acceptable crimp. (aka: K.I.S.S. ;) )
