....and I thought my diesel tractor was hard to start...

Post by AJMD429 »

...imagine starting a 104,000 horsepower diesel engine, with 3 foot diameter cylinders and an eight foot piston stroke...

I wonder what it takes to START that thing...

It would take a 1,000 horse starting motor just to turn it over!

I think it starts on compressed air.

You'd be amazed how fast they start. We use smaller ones in the nukes as back up power, 24 cylinders can't remember piston size.
They're almost the same units used in ships for electric power.
Air start and turbocharged and two per unit, one for each essential electrical system.
By procedure, when all offsite power sources are lost, they have to start and supply power to essential pumps etc within less than 20 seconds.
Every refuel we test them by shutting down each essential system one at a time in four different modes and letting the diesel pick it back up. Never had a failure.
The reason Fukushima melted was they put their diesels in the cellar and they flooded out when the water came in. Dumb. That's not allowed here.

Jet more compact but less torque I guess...

The 777 engine has similar horsepower to the big modern diesel above.

Just what I been looking for...need a motor for my jeep wrangler..
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.
I was born this way.

On left side of picture, just to left of stairs, is that black spot where you insert the crank?

Or is this one like the old-school lawnmowers where you had the handle to wind up the spring, then release to start?

My Grandpaw had one of those wind up mowers when I was a kid in the sixties. I always thought it was a good Idea.

IIRC several years ago I did some calculations on those engines performance and they consume 18,000 gal of heavy fuel oil (super super dirty) per hour at optimum operating conditions. And the EPA puts restrictions on my diesel pickup that took over 200K miles to use that much clean diesel fuel.
