A New Point Of Interest

Post by Pete44ru »

I had a little discretionary money last week, so I bought a new Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie.

It was boxed with a pretty nice Kydex & Cordua Nylon sheath, and I already had a frontier-type leather sheath from another CS bowie that went walkabout.

I'm thinking of cutting off the rubber bumper and making either fancy wood scales or a stacked/compressed leather washer grip, ala a Marble's or Kabar haft.

A blade from Cold Steel is always worth the money. Very nice.

It's a nice piece of hardware right out of the box, and eminently functional.

Now that you own it you can perform whatever modification or improvement your heart might desire.

Is this what they call a "Texas toothpick ?"

Nice. Texas is trying to legalize carry of Bowie knives. 5.5 inches is the current legal blade length unless you are hunting. A ridiculous restriction in my opinion.

I was thinking it looks good with the black scales, are they sticky? Something to be said for a non-slip grip. Nice proportions. Looks like a southern comfort.

Yep, the issue rubber bumper is just sticky enough to afford a good grip - why I'm dithering about changing it.

If you really want a better looking handle, then go for it and show us the pictures of the finished product. If not, well, it is a handle that can be useful on a well made knife of good quality steel. May the person who took your other knife cut himself with it each and every time it is used.

If it will be a "using" blade you might find a liking for that rubber bumper. I have a cold steel master hunter carbon v that is the handiest thing with that sticky grip.

I like it....It might not be a BBQ Bowie with the rubber grip, but those are great for working in the wet....

Kraton doesn't soak up blood or get stained the way leather does.

Here's a thread on doing a leather handle on the Trailmaster.

I am sorry, I tried several times, but I can't seem to post the link right. Maybe someone else can.
