Old World Cooking
Was hankerin for some old world grub...
Not much in the fridge right now but a head of cabbage, a couple of turnips, some potatoes, carrots and onions.
So brain remembers old childhood poem: "Shchi da kasha, pisha nasha..."
"Cabbage soup & Porridge is our food"...
Don't have any buckwheat groats handy to make Kasha, but Shichi made great... (left-over Thanksgiving Turkey Leg from freezer helps...)
Maybe to make borscht again soon..

Cabbage, onions, carrots, "stuff" laying around, garlic, Hungarian Paprika? Some Kielbasa would chop in there pretty good, too....I love that kind of meal.

I have a pound of black beans soaking as we speak....I'll prolly make them thick like refried to go with meat instead of rice, and potatoes/bread...I've been doing low carb lately....

Whenever we make a Corned Beef (or Corned Venison) & Cabbage dinner (with carrots & potatoes), since only two of us here like cabbage, there's usually ample cooked/marinated cabbage left over for me to make one of my faves.
(I make our boiled dinner with some cider vinegar in the water to help tenderize the beef or venison I've corned)
I toss some (or all) the cooked cabbage into a large frypan with salt/pepper, add one can of (any) beer and one can of Cambell's Pork & Beans (large or small, depending upon how much cabbage I have available) with a litle Cider Vinegar, cooking the concoction for 15-20 minutes.
If there's some small bits of carrot, potato and/or Corned meat mixed in with the leftover cabbage, IMO they just add to the flavor.
It makes a tasty side dish for another meal, or a snack.
If I happen to have some Kielbasa, so much the better.
BTW, Blaine - IIRC beans may have just as many carbs as pasta or potatoes.
My VA dietician gave me a low-carb diet that catagorizes what foods a diabetic (like me) should limit or avoid - corn, beans, peas, pasta, potatoes & (any) rice.

Old World Cooking... ain't that anything actually prepared on a stove or oven in lieu of being nuked? I'm thinking eggs, potatoes & bread... but then, it is breakfast time!

I have never had that sort of food. I think Red Beans and Rice sounds better. Cornbread with Jalapenos in it, some tamales, a couple of tortillas, and a Margarita to wash it all down. I also like Irish Soda Bread. Chicken Fried Steak with Sawmill Gravy and mashed potatoes along with a side of Pinto Beans sounds really good. The only thing I eat cabbage in is Bierocks, beef stew, and Runza.

Black beans are lower than others, and they are a complex carb. White rice is bad. So is bread, and gluten/sugar, etc..... In a diabetic diet, I can have some black beans. In the Atkins, as well.BTW, Blaine - IIRC beans may have just as many carbs as pasta or potatoes.

If I avoided these I would be very very very skinny. And decomposed.limit or avoid - corn, beans, peas, pasta, potatoes & (any) rice.
What do you eat instead of those things?

I think I must be simple. Boiled cabbage with salt, pepper and butter on it would work for me, add a piece of linguica and its a heck of a meal!
