Advice sought on Win 70 in 22-250 converted to 250 Sav

Post by wm »

The rifle in question is a 70's era Winchester model 70 in 22-250 . The bore is burned out from varmint hunting over the years. Would it be more cost effective to rebarrel it to 250 Savage with 20" barrel or have the OEM sporter barrel trimmed back to 20" and either rebored or relined to 250 Savage.

The rifle is part of a estate and is being offered for $250. It is certainly used and looks it but it has not been abused or neglected and has that sort of been there - done that look I like so any collectability Ideas are moot. It does have a nice piece of walnut for the stock and was action bedded and barrel free floated somewhere along the way.

I had a 24".Rem Classic in 250 with a 24" barrel cut back to 21" and wished I didn't.

.

I'd pay Jess ( www.35caliber.com ) his $245 and have him rebore/rerifle it to .257" w/o shortening the bbl - which can always be done later, if needed.

If the bbl is really shot out just re-barrel it, about 260$ from Pacnor + installation about 300$+ bluing. JES smallest rebore is .338 caliber. relining isnt in the cards either. danny

Thats a tough call. Even in near perfect shape the gun is not worth more than 5 bills. So...why you buy the gun for $250 and sink another $250 for the barrel and a couple of hundred more for installation?????

I'd forget about it. $100 tops and tell them why.

What I would do is give them $100 and then pick up a new take off barrel (for the same length "short action" caliber that can be had for less than $100 (on the interne), then swap it out yourself. Then pay a smith a few bucks to headspace it for you.----------6

Six is right on the money.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.
I was born this way.

Thanks guys.....Jack really confirmed what I was thinking. I was trying to find a way to massage the $ numbers and come out with the rifle I'd like without being stupid with my money.

Honestly I told the son selling the rifle he would be best served rebarreling it himself to the caliber he wants (308 Win) and using it. Cheaper to do then buying a new rifle like he had planned to do with the proceeds of selling it and he gets the bonus of having the satisfaction of taking his Dad's firearm with him when he hunts. That would mean something to me but I get the sense he does not have the sentimental streak I do for such things.
