Re: Ready For My New Type Of Hunting.
I'd love to have a good quality detector and know how to use it. There is a location on some family property where the Union sabotaged the railroad and a train carrying supplies for the Confederacy was derailed and spilled it's cargo. There has been a couple of guys over the years come and ask permission to search the location of the wreck, and at least one of them came up with some type of lead projectiles, mini balls or such. I was a young man when the last fellow searched the area, too young to know how interesting that would really be to find some buried treasure there.

A'alight... I already have all the bottle caps one could possibly need. And as a kid, I found those and glass shards the ol' fashioned way, with my bare feet!

Details ......please edumacate us......price. quality, etc......That is also my next new toy. My wife's fathers farm, on which we built, has been the local farmstead since 1804 and somebody in the past must have lost some gold coins over the years. The Brandywine Battlefield is also right down the road with areas that are accessible. In 1958 they found a huge cannon on my wife's uncles farm (left by Washington's retreating troops....buried) in Birmingham and its still on display right where they found it.--------------------6

As for educating, I'm totally new and green at this.
I'm hopefull I purchased the right detector.
The week I'm on the dig in August, I should learn a lot from
the more experienced guys & gals.

Whew, that was close. I'm glad I followed the link. I had visions of a retired levergunner walking the sunny beaches of Florida in his baggies looking for loose change, ear rings and the odd left behind class ring.

Re: Ready For My New Type Of Hunting.
Sixgun, I have a White metal detector. As in firearms, you get what you pay for. There are various bands, depth ratings, and discernment algorithms that go with these that jack the price up. I paid about $1100 for my rig, some tools and a half day of instruction. That was about 18 months ago. Since then I have located rings, ear rings, bracelets, cell phones, bullets, and several hundred dollars of coins. You have to trust the equipment. If it says there is a coin at 4 inches or six or 12, there is.

Kewl set up Mike. How did you get on the list for the dig? That's about two miles from my house.

I got involved with the dig they did about 4 years ago.rjohns94 wrote:Kewl set up Mike. How did you get on the list for the dig? That's about two miles from my house.
They now have the full 160+ acres of property and the funding for
up to 5 years worth of digs. Eventually it is to become a historical
park.

First backyard finds.
After overcoming the learning curve of using the discrimination setting and
realizing it's a must use. I didn't realize just how many roofing nails there are
in the ground around the house.
I'm the original owner of the 23 year old property.
The small piece of metal, I have no idea what it was from.
The little metal airplane was my sons from when he was a little guy.
It's been in the ground over twenty years. I couldn't locate the other parts of it.
Surprisingly it was a good 3" below the sod level.
I'm hooked
