Any advantage to a Large Loop lever?

Post by Gunnie 12 »

Any practical advantage in shooting like more speed or comfort?

Is it just for show?

Try a standard loop, with Winter mittens on, and ask again.

No advantage in speed or such....but is sure looks cool. In winter-time though, quite handy.

I wear gloves when hunting in Minnesota winters with no issue with the standard lever.

Mittens would be a challenge though.
Kind regards,

I have large hands and pull a rifle into my shoulder and the large loop keeps the rear off my hand, and there is the issue of mitts. Doug

From my perspective there is no advantage to the large loop levers like you see most of the time. If John Wayne hadn't had the one he used in Stage Coach modified and then carried one like it for his entire movie carrier, nobody would have even considered them.

There is one version I've seen, but I have no link for, that is not a loop really
but an expanded version of a normal lever. For hunting in cold weather, or for folks with big hands, I can see the use of these.

The rounded loop levers are more for show than any real purpose.

No disrespect, Tycer but "gloves" aren't cold-weather mitts/mittens, no matter how much Thinsulate they have.

Thanks for settin' me straight Pete.

If you ever want to try a pair of gloves for cold weather, try SealSkinz.

Also, I'm a puss when it's cold. You won't find me hunting if it colder than zero degrees F.

You are correct that keeping your fingers together in forty below is the only way to go.

I live in the great white north. How do you pull the trigger with mittens on?

Hey, Pete,

How the heck do you grip the gun while wearing mittens? Speaking for myself alone. if it's cold enough to warrant mittens, I'll be huggin' a fire somewhere.

I found those "flip off" Glo-Mitts to be too thin/cold in really freezing cold or a freezing rain, so I took a page from the Morris Glove Co. and cut a small slit (trimming the edges of the slit) in the mitten of my trigger hand, so's I could sneak that little bugger out for a second or two while firing.

A small, dry chemical toe/handwarmer envelope, slipped against the back of my hands, inside the mittens, do wonders fighting numb fingers.

Cool factor = 10
Speed factor = 2 (compared to a "normal" lever)
Overall usefulness = just depends on the shooter!

Big loop levers are not only good for winter hunting with gloves on, but also work well to prevent your fingers getting mashed on the lever with stout loads - especially with the 45-70 Govt.

All the above, plus when the big loop is readily available and the standard loop isn't.

Besides, big loop Levers really are cool.
