Winchester 92 25-20

Post by AkRay »

A guy has an old one of these for sale at the show. It has an octagon barrel without the front sight. The rear sight is there with its tiny opening. The barrel was sawn off to just in front of the mag tube.
The stock has a piece broken off along the tang. The finish is mostly brown rust and the bore is probably in bad shape. It's heavier than it looks. He's asking $600 for it. The serial #is 737xxx

Sounds like it's kind of high for being that rough.

Akray,

You should probably save you money. What caliber is the rifle? From the sounds of it there is less than $250 worth of parts.
Did you happen to get the full serial number of the rifle? I would like to add the info into my research survey. If you come across
any others I will always be glad to help. I own 3 dozen of these rifles and have looked at over 6000 of them.

I disagree,
Even the beaters are bring $500 to $600 on the auctions sites. These are prices for sold completed auctions. Not just what someone is asking. There was even one for just the receiver @ $300.

Looks like 737xxx puts it around 1912-13.

http://www.winchesterguns.com/support/f ... uments.pdf

If the top of the barrel has an oval with a P in it the barrel has been replaced with a Winchester barrel mailed to a gunsmith. The date for the barrel will be on the bottom under the forearm.

Mine is serial 515xxx 24" sporting rifle built in 1894 but the barrel was replaced in 1929 which makes it a shooter. Got it from Homestead Firearms for $750. It still has the black powder firing pin and I shortened the protrusion for modern primers.

Just remember that if you buy junk it will still be junk when you go to sell it.

If it had a mint bore it may be worth the price, but to buy it just because it was "cheap" is not usually a prudent move......speaking from personal experience.

As far as prices go, here is a pretty rough, but all oiginal, 1892 SRC. You can see for a few dollars more...... http://gunauction.com/buy/12569137/rifl ... c-and-r-ok
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
