OT - .257 Roberts

Post by 4t5 »

I was contemplating the purchase of this caliber RUGER rifle, and was wondering, those of you that had experience with it what do you think of it? My other choice is a REMINGTON classic in 7/08. This going to be used on eastern whitetails. Also what is the largest animal you've used it on?

Both great cartiridges.

.257 - 39.0 gr 4064, 100 gr. Sierra or other approx. 3000 fps. 22" barrel

7-08 - 120 gr Sierra, 47.0 gr of H380 2850 fps - 130 gr. and 46.0 gr 2760 fps - 140 gr., 46.0 gr., 2650 fps all very accurate in a 20" barrel. Model 7

.257 a little flatter, 7-08 more flexible.

I don't have a 7mm08, but I do have a 257 Roberts that I built on a Mauser 95 action. It is a sweet shooting little rifle. I have to hold my pressures down a little due to the 95 Mauser receiver, but I still get 2850 fps with 100 gr. bullet from a 21" barrel. With the Ruger you would have some room to experiment with +P load data. A friend shoots a 257 Roberts Ackley Imp. in a Ruger, and man oh man, that thing kills deer like a bolt of lightning.

On the other hand, I have been wanting a 7mm08 in a Model 7 for years. It would give you the option of using some heavier bullets too. You won't go wrong with either one.

There is a Ruger M77 International that was produced in .257 in limited numbers. I wish someone would buy one so I could come visit it.

+2 rusty, I had the chance to buy one of those years ago before I relized how rare they are. I am still kicking myself for not getting it. IIRC it was only $300.

The fellow that runs the local gunshop has one in stainless, which doesn't really trip my trigger. I wanted something a little more traditional.

I even like the International #1's

Just had this conversation with my neighbor . He wants a 257 robert s bolt but wasn't impressed with the rugers matte finish instead of a nice blue. I told him to get a mauser and have it rebarreled to 257 roberts and put a manlicher stock on it with a 21 inch barrel and you would have a nice woods gun for any game you come across.
Once again with the gun industry . If you have money to spent nodody's making what you looking for. Oh well I guess I will just have to hit the gun shows with him.
