25/222 Sako L461

Anyone ever had the chance to shoot or play with one? I have a chance to trade into it, thought maybe it would be fun to play with for awhile.
I would think 2,500-2,600 fps with 85's would be possible with the 24" barrel.
Dunno, will find out tomorrow it the deal goes through.

They were somewhat popular in Oz. in the 1960's or thereabouts, supplanted by the 243W.

I have the 6mm PPC USA version. I can not shoot as well as it can! The previous owner would regularly get tiny little itty bitty ragged holes, I can come close but not as good, even after owning the rifle for the last 20 years. My Bad

Heck, Byron ! I suggest you just buy it to get the micro-Sako rifle !

The only one I ever had was rebarrelled to the issue .222, but with a Remington bbl.

I only found out when I removed the stock & espied the Rem logo/addy on the bbl bottom - whoever did the rebarrel set it up so the Rem logo wouldn't show.

The only reason I sold it is that .222 ammo is hard to come by, locally. (I didn't want to reload for it).

The 25 is interesting. I've been somewhat interested in a 6x45 in a small actioned bolt gun, but the budget isn't likely going to support that for some time.

Nope - The rifle I had was an L-46.

The .223 wouldn't fit in either the L-46 action or magazine, like it would in the later (re-engineered) L-469 & L-461's.

I don't think the barrel is original and for the price of $1,750 haven't pulled the pin yet. Trying to trade into it, but still can't justify price if not factory barrels, if correct would be easier to stomach.
It would be fun though, kind of a 25-20 on steroids.

JMO, but that price seems to be 2x what it should be.

I paid $575 for the L-46, in a local funshop, about 3 years ago. (The LGS owner thought it was a gennie, and didn't believe it had a Remington bbl until I showed it to him).

That's what I'm thinking too, unless I can prove original, which seems impossible.
serial # 111xxx, caliber marked about correct place, but no other markings on barrel.

Sako marked the top of the L-461 factory barrels just ahead of the receiver, in a line perpendicular to the bore C/L, so it can be read from above:

*SAKO
CAL..222

Additionally, there should be a visible proofmark near the juncture of the bbl/receiver ring, at about the top of the stockline.

AND, there should be a line of factory stamping/address/etc, in the RH side of the bbl, visible just above the stockline next to the rear open/iron sight.

I believe it was in the 1970's, Jim Carmichael wrote an article about a wildcat he developed. I believe it was a .222 necked up to .25, and he called it the 25/222 Copperhead. It was a dandy little cartridge. That article can be found in annals of The Handloader magazine. Say, if you really don't like the 25/222, I will take off your hands. I think you have a gem.

Just a correction, the Copperhead was developed by the late John Wooters, not Jim Carmichael.

Like the TCU series of cartridges, fun, economical, at least as effective as the .25-35 Win.

No go on a trade. Gun has been rebarreled .
Really would have liked to shoot that one for awhile.
Chad found a 25 Rem pump in 25/20 though.

I built my 25-222 Mag 40 years ago. At that time Clymer or anyone didn't have a reamer but made one for me. It is the absolute most favorite rifle I own. I used a 222 Remington Mohawk action. The 25-222 you are contemplating is a real sweetheart. If you end up with it I think you will be a happy camper.
