Post by Les Staley »

at gunshow in Rock Springs Wyoming this weekend. New in red box marked "Winchester licensee U.S. Repeating Arms Co., New Haven Ct U.S.A. made in Japan Cal 45 Colt engraved scene left side receiver,, two deer .. right side one antelope.. no tang safety, regular hammer with half cock, not rebounding.. 24" round barrel, crescent buttplate, gold trigger.. Shot it for the first time this evening. some pistol loads I had around, clover leafing at 65 yds.. some in the same hole.. guess I got a good one.. Les

Good for you, sounds like a really nice rifle all the way around.

Cool,
And yes, if it is one of the japanese made guns it will be made by Miruko, the same folks that made the Brownings. If it is configured as you say and is not a conversion you have a rare bird.

Pete44ru,

What Les is talking about is a Winchester-branded Japanese gun without a safety button or slide, and with a half-cock hammer. There could be others out there, but, usually, the new Winchesters have added "safety features".

Heads Up!

Post by Les Staley »

Steve, pictures are on the way.. let me know if you get 'em.. also includeing a picture of a Lion I killed in November 07.. Pete44ru: the first one you show is like mine, but mine has a little blued filler (factory done, I'm sure) in the tang where the safety would have been.. It is equal quality of the rest of the rifle.. gun has not been fired.. till last night..(took the kitty cat with a Puma 454, figured it was appropriate.)

Les, my son, who lives in Colorado has been searching for one of those. May I ask what you paid for it? Over a thou.? Man, I remember they were 5 c-notes when they first came out and most of us just sneared at 'em.-------------Sixgun

Paid?

Post by Les Staley »

Sixgun: The fellow had it and a 73 Uberti on his table along with some other stuff and this Winchester 1892... he wanted $895... talked him down to $840. I had just sold a couple of rifles, a Poly Tech M14S with a usgi bolt conversion for $1400 so I had a little extra and found a nice 1950 Winchester 1897 for $600.. got it too!! Les

Hi Les,
Here's your gun. It's one of the Miruko made Wins that someone has converted.
O Man, for awhile there i thought somebody slipped one by the liability lawyer there at winchester. That would be like a mis-stuck $5 gold piece.

They did a good job plugging the hole. Looks like the rebound hammer was used. Does it now have a 1/4 cock notch?

92 Winchester

Post by Les Staley »

Thanks for posting those pictures, Steve. There are only two positions on the hammer, half cock and full cock.. maybe a replacement? Yeah, nice job of plugging the hole.. sure fooled me! This rifle really groups tightly at 65 yds, most clip the same hole. Action is much tighter than my Rossi Pumas.. needs to be shot a little.. Les

I don't think it's a repacement. See that arched cutout there on the bottom. If it has two postiion whether you call it 1/4 or 1/5 it sounds like it was welded up and a second notch cut. I just use the Rossi hammer and trigger, but I'm not that good of a welder either.

Could you please tell me what kind of bullet you used in your 92. Just pick one up and wonder if a SWC will feed. Do you think RN only will work. THANKS

bullets

Post by Les Staley »

Sixgun Jr: the bullets I have on hand are Hornady 250gr XTP stock #45200. They seem to feed fine crimped in the canuler. Steve: when I take it apart sometime I'll look at the hammer to see if it is welded up. It rests completely on the bolt and fireing pin, no rebound. If someone did this, they did a nice job.. trigger pull is wonderful, light and crisp. Les

RNs are not the only shape that will work. I use truncated cones and round, flat nose shapes in mine. The width of the meplat will determine whether a particular SWC will feed. Due to the angle of the riser (lifter) the round needs to overcome the crown (for lack of a better word) at the base of the chamber. Depending on the round's overall length, width of the meplat and that camming over action necessary to transition the cartridge from the angle to flatly enter the chamber, the nose can get jammed against the roof of the chamber. Someone the other day posted a diagram of the mechanics, but I didn't trouble myself to search for it. (Responding to a similar question). I have some 250 grain SWCs that seem to feed fine thru mine, but in another, similar rifle (not mine) they don't. So, my definitive answer is: Maybe?

Boy aint that the truth. no two guns are alike. When guns are made, the maker has a nominal size for each and ever parts that goes into the gun. But they will accept a part that is plus or minus a few thousands. Once all these various parts are assemble every gun will be slightly different. This is called stackup.
I have had consecutive serial numbered guns here. One would run even on empty brass, the other would not run on anything without some tweeking.

May be a Browning 92 hammer. I got one for my 92 to convert it, as well as the mainspring parts.

You know, I bet it is. The B92 hammer had that cutout too.
