That "deer-in-the-headlights" look...

This is what my 44MagHunter had hanging up in front of where I park when I pulled in the driveway tonight...

He probably won't post about it, because he's now too Macho to use leverguns ("...that's cheating because it makes hunting too easy..." ), and only hunts with a bow...

There is a time and a place for every tool. Encourage him to post, a lot of us here have a bow or two mixed in amongst the lever guns and would enjoy the story.

When you can turn powder and lead into meat it's a good day. Good job.

Good on him, AJ - My adult son also usually eschews firearms for bow hunting, regularly bagging a baker's half-dozen deer/year.

But, then - our state's bow season runs from Oct 1 through Jan 31, affording him plenty of opportunity.

Nothing quite as satisfying as a successful bow hunt. Tell him congrats.

That is some nice looking free range organic protein. Hunting with a bow is a skill that could be a way to survive if things go to Helena Handbasket. (Yes, I do know how it is really spelled, but it sounds more like a real place this way.)

Thanks for posting papa AJ!

I love leverguns y'all, but I just LOVE hunting with a bow instead. I compete all over the country in archery tournaments so I shoot a bow a lot. Hunting with a gun is far too easy in my opinion. I love the challenge of besting critters in their game of survival with a bow and arrow. Nothing better!

Thirteen deer came in around my stand. All within 50 yards. Finally one of the does gave me a good shot at 37 yards and I sent an arrow through the boiler room. She jumped and staggered 12 yards before going wabble-legged and letting the last few gulps of air and blood out of her chest.

One of the does that was standing by her at the shot ran a few steps and then tried to figure out what the heck happened to her leader. She made the mistake of giving me a really nice quartering-away shot at 15 yards or so and I sent another meat missile through the pump station. The G5 Tekan3 broadhead zipped through both lungs and left a nice tunnel on its way. She ran about 30 yards and met the same demise for a nice nap in the snow.

No tracking required for either doe. Copious buckets of blood and super quick, easy deaths to both does. Then the work began ;) Dragging both of them together (with my pack and bow, etc...) was "fun".
