Newbie Questions Marbles Tang Site for Rossi 92

Post by msdb »

Hi Lever gun newbie here. I'm considering a Marbles Tang sight for a Rossi 92. I tried the search feature but did not find what I was looking for, just have a few questions:
1) The photos on the Brownells websites appears the sights require two screws to fasten onto the tang. I believe the Rossi only has one tang screw, would I need to drill and tap or will the sights hold fast with one screw? DO they make a tang site with only one screw?
2) Do the sights fold down when not in use? The descriptions do not mention either way. I also asked the on line help guy from Brownells he thinks they do not, but he was uncertain.
3) How about the Steve's Gunz rear peep safety replacement? It seems like a great alternative, but I'm concerned it might be positioned too far forward, would I get clipped by the falling hammer if I place my eye/face right next to the peep?

Thanks!

I bought my 92 NIB less than a year ago, so if yours is also new it should be similar. Mine is the 24" oct. barreled 44. I got my Marbles tang from Brownells, their # 579 009 807. It takes 2 screws but no D&T is required on the newer rifles, although if memory serves me right, and there is no guarantee of that, a longer screw is reqd. and is sold individually. I went to the Marbles web sight for info and then ordered from whoever had it in stock and offered the best price. Read up on the older Marbles style and the newer style before you make a decision, both should be avail. I went with the older style, the post can be changed, the new style can't.
FWIW I got the DVD and a couple of springs from Steve's Gunz, best money I ever spent. The Rossi is a bit different than a Marlin and following his advice really slicked up the workings. As for the tang....I'm 68 and need bifocals to safely walk down the street. The Marbles tang allows me to fill up the bullseye with Hornady 200g XTP at 200 yds. Good luck.

--They do require two screws, a longer tang screw plus a shorter one. My Rossi as the second hole, towards the forward part of the tang; I have no idea if all Rossis of all vintages have it, but if you need the hole drilling & tapping it is a small gunsmithing job.

--They do fold.

-- You don't need to get your eye right up on the peep sight, any more than you need to get right up on the original sight. Steve's sight is simple, rugged, and not in the way of anything.

Many thanks for the replies! This is exactly the information I was looking for. You guys have given me several options, all of them good ones too.

Brownells and Midway both have the wrong sight suggested for Rossi 92. I bought the 'suggested' Marbles sight only to discover that I could not sight it in beyond 50 yards. Your best best is to get the "improved" tang sight with interchangeable sight post. I changed to this sight and both me and the rifle are much happier now.

If you use the "suggested" tang sight you will need to replace the front sight too. If you use the "Improved" sight you will not have to replace the front sight.

Look on eBay for the guy who makes large sight disks. I got a 3/4" with .050 aperture - it looks good and shoots well.

Of course you could put a receiver sight one the Rossi - you'd still have to tap holes to mount it, but it is an option.

Somewhere in this thread - http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... 31#p390174 - I posted a picture of my Taurus 'equivalents' of the Marble Tang sight, and why I like it (besides the price).

Hi ajmd: many thanks, I think we may have a winner, How has the Taurus 62 held up over time? Did the screw holes coincide the the Rossi 92 tang screws? Thanks!

The octagon Rossi rifles have both holes. The rear most hole is also the stock screw. So, it requires a longer screw.
The round barrel Rossi carbines only have the stock screw hole. so, the tang will require D&T-ing.

I had a Marbles sight on my Browning 1886 but I wanted to use other posts so I bought the Improved version of the Marbles.
I found that the improved sight does not fold as far as the original one did and it gets in the way of my thumb when using the barrel sight.

It's because the block at the base of the stem is bigger on the improved sight and hits on the base.

Not sure if this applies to all their sights but it's a point worth checking.

Holes same and held up well (all four of them I have on 3 Rossis & a Marlin). Fold totally flat. Clicks pretty positive. Made extra tall stem for Marlin but found out later I probably could have bought one from Taurus or Brownells. Dot of fingernail polish to keep windage from accidentally shifting. Bought all four sights for total around $135 with shipping back maybe six or eight years ago. Look like same as Marbles to me.

Don't worry about d&t for the second screw. I have 4 different rifles with a Marbles tang sight on them, including a Rossi (Puma) model 92 .357 Mag. All of these sights are installed just using the tang screw, sucked up tight, not one of them has ever budged and all function just fine. I even know a guy who mounted one like this and cut off the head of the second screw, gluing it into the remaining hole so it would "look right" :D

I can only imagine the thoughts going through someone's head when they discover that...

Welcome to the addiction...........

I would suggest Steve's bolt peep sight, which is a drop-in replacement for the bolt-top lawyer safety - I made my own version a few times, using a Skinner LoPro peep in a home/hand made replacement plug I made.

Replacing the bolt-top safety is easily done @ home, via simply opening the bolt & tapping out the safety's retaining pin from the locking lug recess in the rear quarter of the bolt, dropping in the peep, and re-pinning with the issue pin.

Sighting/zeroing with a bolt peep wasn't an issue with both a .357 & a .45 Colt Rossi M92, using the issue front sights, since the bolt peep is directly above the bore C/L - and ergo, also no issues with a tang sight interfering with the trigger hand's thumb/grasp on the wrist/tang.
