I too hope 6pt's family is ok.

The area circled in red and the city "Tacloban City" indicated with the A is where the brunt of the storm struck. However, the area circled in yellow is the area where I think 6pt says his family lives. I know he (6pt) spoke of going to his wife's brothers house or perhaps another family member in Gingoog and that is in the yellow circle. Note that the two areas are only separated by a short distance so I'm sure 6pt's family was touched by the storm.

Best to your family 6pt.

Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers !

I will be sure to tell her about the thoughts and prayers as she appreciattes it very much . She thinks Americans look down on Filipino's and I told her it's been my experience that's not the case .

All of my family there are okay and not at a loss .

My wife , our daughter , my mother in law , 3 sisters in law and several nieces and nephews live in Cagayan de Oro City . My brother in law and his wife , son daughter in law and two grnadchidren live in Gingoog City . My brother in laws oldest daughter and son live in Valencia also on Mindanao . They are all fine . My wife's oldest brother lives in Pasig very close to Manila , he happened to be home from his job in Saudi Arabia and was down visitng his mother to celebrate the one year anniversary of my father in laws death . His wife and three daughters were unable to attend the get together but they were fine in Pasig .
We have another niece with a 6 week old newborn that works and lives in Cebu City on the island of Cebu , her mom was there with her and they came thru okay as well . Although I think they got a bit more of the brunt of the storm then the rest of them .

But I was told ALL are OKAY and UNHURT . I also think loss of property was minimal for them as well .

To say I am looking forward to returning in February is an understatement !

After being there first hand many times I can understand what the people on Tacloban are feeling . Everyday life there is hectic so I can imagine what it's like in this tyoe situation .

I see the NBA has sent two donations coming to about half a million US dollars !

Also see Bob Arum sent 1 million Filipino Pesos , that equates into about $25,000 . Arum is Paquiao's promoter .

Also saw the US Marines are already on site trying to help as best they can .

My wife told me last night this was a Class 4 or 5 Typhoon . Which is obviousely at the top of the scale .

They have a Class 1 expected to head Davao and Surigao this week .

When I was there in 2008 I was at Ninoy Aquino Airport waiting to board the plane to return to the USA and a typhoon was about to come thru I think a 1 or 2 and the palm trees at the airport were bending sideways . It caught my attention so I hate to even try to imagine what a Class 4 or 5 is like !

Nice map !

Gingoog where my brother in law lives is east of CDO and about halfway between CDO and Butuan . It's actually about where the line is I think east of CDO !

My BIL's oldest daughter lives in Valencia which is due southeast of CDO .

Me being American and all I like to travel around and not really worrying about Man type beasites . Anyway my wife frowns on us going to Iligan or Zamboanga , these are getting into what can be called "muslim areas" . Matter of fact Zamboanga was where they had a pretty decent skirmish between Philippine forces and Muslim Rebel forces a month or two ago .

We've not missed a day actually . Usually I talk to her on the phone once or twice a day and on the net on YM once each day .

If you have a "smart phone" you can download a thing called "Viber" and we can talk each day at no cost !

Glad to hear everything is OK. My wife works with about a dozen or so folks from the Philippines. You can tell your wife for me that as a whole I've never met a harder bunch of working folks in my life. They all go to the same church here and they invite us every time they have a special event.
I was really touched when we went to their building dedication. The pastor, who is also a history major got up to speak and he said that they were so grateful to the United States. He said that in 1898 when the United States forces came to the Philippines to free them from Spanish rule, the second person off the boats to set foot on their soil was a missionary that came to spread the Gospel.

Thanks !

I think it's safe to say after meeting my wife and her family and spending time there , they were the ones that got me started on liking the human race again !

Most of my family here in the USA has died off , but over there I am treated as if I've been a member of the family for 30 years not just 7 short years !

That's why it's important that you keep your head on a swivel when you go there 6pt. The people there are wonderful but unfortunately polotics and religion are an important factor on Mindanao now. I was stationed at Subic Bay, PI (Olongapo) for two years and pulled in there many times aboard ship while in the Navy so I do have some sense as to life in everyday PI.

Again, best to your family. Glad to hear everthing seems to be in order for them.

Any word on how much longer it will be?
