Old Book: Back to Basics - Traditional American Skills

Post by Old Ironsights »

What a find; this book covers all kinds of topics for self-sufficient living from gardening, canning, logging, fishing, recreation, crafts, cabin construction, making beer and wine, butchering...you name it. Nicely laid out with good illustrations, too. Would make a great addition to your homeschooling library.

Amazon has them for ~$4 used.

http://www.amazon.com/Back-Basics-Tradi ... +to+basics

If you don't like Amazon, try other used book sellers, such as:

half.com
abebooks
alibris

Make sure you get the one published in 1981; there is a newer version which they made 'PC' by removing the word 'American' from the title.

You a fan of the Foxfire books?

:?:
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I have a few. Certainly not all.

If they weren't so dang Statist, I would like Mother Earth News & Mother Jones as well... (OK, I occasionally read them for the Articles, but never look at the Politics...)

I have a pretty good stash of pre-1950 "how to farm" books too - including a really good one published in the 30's by John Deere...

Good information to have. But doing most of these things is probably illegal now, especially the being self-sufficient part.

Not necessarily yet (barring Building Codes etc) but maybe soon enough. However, the book's info on Looms, beermaking, cabinetry, composting, etc are certainly useful, even if you don't follow their instructions on making Adobe &/or Log homes...

It's a great book and I often read mine. It has no section on firearms(at least muzzleloading should be in there?) but they do show a way to skin a rabbit. Still...much enjoyment in there.

I agree wholeheartedly - I never figured out why so many of those who respect 'the environment' can be so completely ignorant when it comes to human interaction such as politics.

I don't understand how anyone who understands biodiversity and the unintended consequences of pesticides and large scale mono-cropping and so on can be anything other than a complete capitalist...

Or how a physician or minister or law enforcement officer or nurse, who is supposed to hold life especially sacred, can support 'gun control'...

I could go on...

and on...

and on...

For magazines try looking at Backwoods Home. they have a website with forums as well. From a political standpoint they are more Libertairian.

Another great book to have is "A Country Encyclopedia" by Carla Emory. She covers everything from birthing your young to how to bury your dead and everything in between.

I really like the Foxfire books, I wish I owned them. My uncle let me use some of his when I was younger to build my first distillery. I learned a lot from them. I might build a new still just for old times sake.

Speaking of "Backwoodsman" magazine, the Sept/Oct 2013 issue has an article where the author has done to his Mosin almost exactly what I did to mine.

for information on stills, go to youtube and search Popcorn Sutton. There is a rather long multi part story of the last run he ever made.

There are some pretty amazing refraction stills you can buy on the internet for fairly reasonable money (for that they can do).

Of course, they are sold as "alcohol fuel stills" but they still use food grade metals...

Is it illegal there to have a still for the purpose of making your own liquor? Here I can legally make as much as I want as long as I don't try and sell it. Same with tobacco.

"It is self evident that access to intoxicating liquors is a necessity in a free state, the right of the people to brew, ferment and distill alcoholic beverages shall not be infringed"

Pity your founding fathers did not come up with that one!

I never really thought about that, but you are so right. Might just build a couple, copper is pretty expensive now, but high temp glass and a propane heat source would be the easiest and cheapest way to go now.

Maybe Pitchy can come up with some prototypes for us??

The lib-tards here would ban the evil alcohol,(yes, I do remember prohibition, but I am being facetious) could you imagine the names of the groups that would be for alcohol control...................................................

The revenooers here presume that any distilled alcohol you produce in excess of a very small net amount is destined for illicit (untaxed) sale unless denatured.

Prohibition never really ended.
