38-55 Alloy

Post by ColColt »

I was curious as to what alloy you 38-55 shooters use. I've been using ww's plus a dash of tin behind 22-23 gr of H4198 with White's BAC lube. I get just a touch of leading but nothing a few passes with the brass brush doesn't take care of.

Same here, minus the tin, usually (I'm cheap). The biggest issue is getting a bullet large enough to seal the bore.

My groove diameter is .359" and that's the size I use since that's the largest Lyman size die I could find. The mould only throws that size bullet or a tad over and I just use the size die to lube.

For the 38-55 I use ww plus 4% tin.......water quenched. They come out at 8-9 on the Saeco scale which about equals Lymans #2 alloy. Plus, every rifle bullet I use (except pistol calibers in rifles such as the 32-20, 38-40 etc.)) wears a gas check.

Using more tin will give you a fatter bullet. -----------------------6

This. Well, except I load them in 375 Win. They will take the pressure, all the way up to full power jacketed loads.
